Bummer! I wish I had the same lovely experiences that have been recounted here. Unfortunately most gallery spaces didn’t open until noon when I was there on a Tuesday at 11, and many were closed, changing exhibits, or just simply didn’t seem like places to pop in. I adore the concept and recommend anyone do their research and learn about upcoming openings, because the concept itself is quite fantastic. I just wish I had the opportunity to see more while I was there, and look forward to a future visit when I can take it all in.

It really doesn’t look like much from outside, or when you first walk in. I almost thought this is just some office building — but don’t be fooled! Most of the art is hidden away on the upper floors, and it’s definitely worth coming in to explore all the little galleries that line the halls. There’s always something new and interesting to see. It’s free, too!

Made my quarterly visit to The Belgo last Saturday. There’s always a few shows that delight. Among my favorites this time around — Bettina Forget, Anne Ramsden at Galerie Sas, Joe Lima at Galerie Nicolas Robert, a gorgeous Giacometti print highlights the Galerie Roger Bellemare and Galerie Christian Forget group show. I may make it a monthly visit!

Home to countless vernissages, conveniently located downtown in an otherwise pretty awful St Catherine location, holder of secrets from a past life that I may or may not have led, the Belgo is an unassuming spot for all things contemporary art in Montréal. Inside this typical Québécois /European /Canadian building rests one of my favourite spots to discover new art in the city. Galleries, dance studios, yoga spaces — this former industrial space is headquarters for all modern art lovers in Montréal. And who knows, if you’re lucky you’ll stumble upon one of the countless openings that will inevitably be going on during any given weekend where you’ll sample some cheap wine; eat a few grapes, some carrots and a lot of cheese; and get a glimpse of some of the best up and coming artists Canada has to offer. …sigh. I miss Montréal.

The Belgo is home to over 30 galleries and artist studios making it an epicenter of Montréal’s visual art community. You can roam around and poke your head in places and have adventures in here pretty much any day of the week. Check out the Galerie Illustration Québec for group shows by incredible illustrators. One of the gallery owners keeps a great blog about events going on in the building:
