I want a cheap, fast, no frills, no perfume, simple haircut with no upsell as is the practice at most of the«salons» around Montréal and that’s what I ALWAYS get at Coiffure Pierre. Even if I have to look my best for a formal occasion where I have to abandon my usual homeless demeanor, this is my choice. Also, while I haven’t been a McGill student for 50 years, I still get a $ 17 student rate. Although maybe she does deduct for my increasing bald pâté which she denies is her doing. She knows more than a little about McGill across the street and displays Redmen football team photos on the wall which is acceptable marketing. If you want talk, you get talk and interestingly she has commented on my conversations from months earlier so she IS listening. So this place is my choice for the duration.

I saw the reviews and checked it out. Asked for a simple mohawk and got a fucked up buzz cut that looked like a shredded cocnut. When i try to explain to her, all she told me was«i know what you mean but i cant do anything». It was just awkward and hideous. Waste of 17 dollars. Had to fix my hair by myself when i got home. Will only go back if she paid me

A previous reviewer mentioned the absence of conversation. That was certainly true of my visit. And while this lack of chit-chat bordered on brusqueness, I can’t complain about the end results. My coiffeuse worked at a swift, but precise pace. She was a bit rough, but, gentle enough when it came to the straight razor, thankfully. Seems the student rate has experienced a slight inflation from 2008. She rang me up at 17 $. When I asked about the discount, she repeated 17 $. So either she assumed I was a student — the place is basically across the street from McGill — or I was hosed. Either way, can’t argue with a decent cut at that price in downtown Montréal. Considering I have a hard time communicating(or even deciding upon) how I want my hair cut in English, I was especially anxious about finding a place in a city where the default language is French. All things considered, I think they’ve found a new monthly customer. Better to stick with a place that’s a star short of perfection, than to keep rolling the dice, I say.

Fast and excellent buzz cut, complete with straight razor shave and talc. $ 17 plus tip are you are out the door for a 20. Perfect.

Once I discovered Coiffure Pierre, I never went to another barber shop while I lived in Montréal. They had a great student rate($ 13, and they didn’t even ask if I was a student – or maybe it was obvious). I always got a great cut, which lasted as long as two months. Hey, I put off haircuts a lot. The attention to detail was likely a factor: they would always go around the ears and neck with a straight razor and hot shaving cream. And when getting a cut in December, they’d even give you a shot of schnapps. Coiffure Pierre used to be further south a few years ago(near Bleury and St. Catherine), but they moved to this location on Sherbrooke, which is in a nicer building. It was also nearer to me and other people living in the McGill ghetto.
