We went to Montréal for the memorial day weekend. We stopped by Fido to get a pre-paid sim card + 500MB data so we could use it to get around city. Total cost is 40CAD + tax, which is not cheap. But we bought it anyway. So it was okay at the first 2 hours(No LTE, only 3G with iPhone 6) then the data network stopped working while we were strolling at old town. We thought it was bad reception. Then we realized it was not the case but the store already closed when we tried to call them. Then we tried customer service — no luck. Everything was closed at 5 pm cause it was weekend. We tried their web site when we got back to hotel but it seemed the website was having issue so it wasnt helpful at all. Next day we finally got a hold with customer service and was told system was down and call back at around noon. So we went back to store, which opens at 12pm at Sundays. The guy told us it was a system error when he added the 500MB data and sure he fixed it but our trip was almost near the end as we were returning the next day! I complained to that guy but he told us nothing he could do. Overall, I think it was a terrible service through all(store, customer service, and website) and we wasted too much time trying to get help for our issue.

I stopped in at the flagship Fido store twice in the last two weeks. My first experience was so/so — I really didn’t feel like the clerk was listening to me and she didn’t exactly go out of her way to seek out what I was looking for. Truth be told, she seemed a little indifferent to me and I got the feeling that she didn’t really care one way or another, if I chose Fido. Now, that being said, I went back to Fido today because I wanted to switch providers. My original plan was to go there with an iPhone but not surprisingly, no one on this damn island has the newer versions. When I walked in, the fellow at the front of the store was taking names down so that the clerks could meet with people in the order in which they arrived at the store. While I was waiting, I asked him a few questions and he was able to provide me with the answers I was looking for. When my name was finally called, I spoke to Helen, who made my experience pretty darn good. I explained to her that I wanted to port over my number from another provider, but continue to use my old phone. The caveat being that I plan to switch phones very soon. According to her, I can do that and not have to pay any additional fees. Excellent. As luck would have it, my current phone is locked and I have no intention of paying $ 50 to unlock it since I’ll be ditching it. Now, I could have waited until I got my new phone, but I was hell-bent on locking in the current promo rate before it expires, so Helen suggested that I borrow one of their loaner phones. I had to give them a $ 50 deposit that I will get back when I return the phone, but I can keep the phone until my new one arrives. She set me up as a Fido client and started the porting process so once that’s done, I’ll be all set. Of course, after I decide to go over to Fido, the entire Rogers network experiences a nationwide outage… I don’t know what to think about that… Hmm… I rate this a 3 because I had to wait a good 20 minutes before speaking to someone today, as the store wasn’t adequately staffed. Also, I am factoring in my first visit with the chick who was indifferent — and I should mention that of the two phones I had wanted to look out, BOTH weren’t charged so I couldn’t even see their interface. Um, hello? What do you think power bars are for? If you do stop in, ask for Helen — she will hook you up. One major con for me is that if you want to go iPhone through Fido, you have to get a max plan at either $ 75 or $ 85 plus taxes. These are totally obnoxious prices for a cell phone. As well, if you’re not an exiting customer, you can’t go iPhone with the discounted rate + 24 tab. You have to purchase the phone outright. I don’t know what that’s about — I mean, don’t they want new clients? My tip to you is to go in with your own phone — this way you can select whatever plan you want AND get 10% off your monthly rate.
