I’m a small time homebrewer and pretty inexperienced. This guy is always helpful and patient. I accidentally did not tell him to put my grains in separate bags after he milled them, and he crushed all new grains and separated them for no extra charge. It was absolutely my mistake and he was down about 30 pounds of grain, but he didn’t lose composure for a second. Good guy, great place

Stephane Laroche, the Propriétaire of Choppe a Barrock, is the most helpful, kindest, friendliest guy I’ve ever dealt with as a customer. I bugged Stephane on the phone about four times before I went in to his store, because I was looking for an adapter for a CO2 tank that nobody seemed to have. Stephane didn’t have it either, but he made some really great suggestions and since he really knew what he was talking about, I finally went in to see him to help me solve my dilemma. I’m building my own laboratory incubator from scratch, and it requires a CO2 supply. This is far outside what Stephane has to deal with on a regular day, to be sure, but he was up to the challenge of helping me figure out the best solution for my incubator build. I was extremely grateful. I noticed that Choppe a Barrock has a fairly regular clientele, and all the hipster homebrewers seem to know Stephane quite well. Let’s just say many styled beards were coming and going in and out of the store the day I was there. The shop looks unassuming, kind of like a warehouse set-up(but smaller), but this place is well stocked with everything you need for small-scale brewing and wine-making. Also, as I mentioned, Stephane knows his shit. I’d trust his advice any day. He’s also very modest and just wants to help. I was also super excited by the other stuff I saw in his store, which I wasn’t there looking for but which I might go back for: laboratory flasks, mainly! How I love lab glassware. There are also big bags of grains, pH testing kits, bungs of all sizes, and he refills 5LCO2 tanks for $ 20. I’ll be going back to see this guy sometime for sure. Check him out — I bet you’ll make a new friend, too.

The person that runs the shop is nice; although, service can be a bit slow. The selection is limited compared to most other brew supply stores I’ve been to. They carry the basic necessities and are conveniently located in the Plateau. Well at least conveniently located for me. I suppose that one is highly relative. I will note one thing that I’ve notice special about them. Unlike the other stores near Montréal they carry both dry and liquid extract. The hops carried are leaf and not pelt form as well.
