Le Saint-Houblon

On est de retour sous les soins très compétents et chaleureux de Laurence avec deux amis avec qui on veut partager un bon repas dans une ambiance conviviale on est encore complètement satisfaits. Pour moi les Pogos, le reste une poutine champignons, un Burger d’agneau, et des tacos poulet le tout arrosé de leurs excellentes bières et cocktails.

This place was our first in Montréal and it didn’t disappoint! Great draft beer selection and creative cocktail menu. They offer a full lineup of spirits made in Quebec, which were all outstanding (we had a flight). We didn’t arrive until almost midnight, yet they still had a expansive menu offering well above average bar food. The bartender was really great and very excited to welcome us to Montréal. Saint-​Houblon was a great first Montréal experience. So glad we walked in!

Saint-​Houblon is really nice bar /​brew pub. Drinks menu is pretty long, cocktails, wines and a lots of beers, but not on the menu. The beers you have to figure out from the multiple TV screens hanging on the walls. Depending on where you sit you may see or not the list, and descriptions. On a hockey night the beer list is gone and of course the Habs take over the screens. On such a night our waiter had the difficult task to figure out what kind of brew exactly we would like to try. He was nice and willing to bring samples for those who couldn’t decide.
The space in the pub is well designed. There are multiple seat options, low and tall tables, good for small and bigger groups, and the comfy seats in front of the bar more suitable for couples. The pub offers nice food menu, we focused mainly on the snack choices, and my fries had yummy aioli dip, but one of my friends truly enjoyed her burger.
Service is nice, but a little bit on the slow side as it is getting late and busy. Saint-​Houblon is in between the three and four stars, prices are very competitive, but all the beers I tried were a little bit underwhelming. I would definitely come back and I hope to be able to choose a brew from a readable list that will win my heart.

Excellent ! Un diner parfait, ils ont un rabais dans le jour. Tout les repas a plus de 8 $ peuvent etre acompagner par une bière pour un supplement de 1 $ !!! Wow !
J’ai mangé le burger d’agneau au feta, il etait parfait et la serveuse etait vraiment tres gentille !
J’aime beaucoup l’endroit, le restaurant est bien situé et très beau !

J’adore cet endroit. Très grand et bon choix de bières. La nourriture est excellente. La poutine offre une bonne portion et un bon rapport qualité-​prix. Le poulet est un peu gras, le boeuf trop goûteux. La meilleure est celle au canard. Les brunchs sont aussi très bons, quoique plus coûteux. J’y vais souvent après de longues soirées à l’UQAM, pour fêter, pour manger tard, avant ou après un spectacle, etc. Un endroit au coeur du quartier latin, accessible et qui convie t à tous les goûts!

Service is fantastic and the food is even better. All though this is a bar, the food is surprisingly good. Try his place if your in Montréal, it’s definitely worth your time!

A bar with a good selection of beer and food. I went here with a group of 4 people, and we decided to try this bar on Saint-​Denis.
The beer menu is displayed on a screen on the wall. I would personally prefer to have a paper menu for this. At one point the screen was even having problems and blacked out. However, the waitress was very nice and ended up writing down some choices of beer for us, which we ended up trying and enjoying.
The place is very busy and noisy, like most bars in Montréal. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive.
I ordered the Tsukemen, a noodle dish with duck, boiled eggs, soba noodles, shiitake mushrooms and a dashi broth. For food coming from a bar, it was really good. My companions ordered some ravioli stuffed with ox tail, and nachos as an appetizer.
We decided to try the desserts too. 3 of us tried the apple pie, and 1 of us the cannoli. I thought the apple pie was a little bland and overcomplicated. There were cashews inside as well as cream chevre cheese, but despite all that, the apples themselves didn’t have any seasoning.
All in all, everyone was happy with their meals and beer. I’d go back for sure.

J’ai essayé 2 drinks et les deux se sont avérés vraiment pas bon. La bouffe est passable. Belle terrasse. Je né recommande pas.

Great service but really the food is just average. Very disappointing that we trekked out what was supposed to be a gastropub. It’s not bad though if you’re in the nabe. Sit outside and enjoy the people watching.

Surprisingly good beer bar. We were just walking around looking for someplace with curbside seating and found Le Saint-​Houblon (we had gone to Saint Bock the day prior and wanted to try something different).
Much to our surprise, Saint Houblon also prides itself with its beer selection (inside, they have lots of TV screens showing their menu). Service was quick and our waiter was nice enough.

Okay, maybe not quite 5-​star, but had a great lamb burger (done perfectly, which means a good amount of pink) and a very good beer. The staff are super friendly and helpful. The best part was it was the après midi special. Basically, get a dish over $ 8 and your beer (tho not all beers) is a buck! Magnifique!

Super belle place, bien situé par contre ils n’ont de menu de bières… pour une place qui vend ses mérites, c’est un peu décevant…

Nouveau gastropub sur st-​Denis proche de l’UQAM. Situé dans l’ancien local du Chlorophylle, on né reconnaît pas l’endroit. Aménagé sur deux étages, avec un décor moderne/​vieux: bois, brique, cuir et d’énormes baies vitrées à l’avant.
Nous sommes bien assis et peu importe l’endroit tu né te sens pas coincé (sauf peut-​être au bar).
J’ai trouvé la nourriture bien ordinaire pour être honnête. J’avais pris le burger d’agneau (qui était détrempé), mais les saveurs étaient quand même au rendez-​vous. la sauce était bien assaisonnée. Un gros plus pour les sangria et les drinks qui sont, disons-​le, très forts et surtout très ’ bons dans yeule ’

We were here for a friend’s birthday. I was the last one to get in and the first one to get my food and my drink, somehow! I obviously did not object to this, but it made me feel a tad bad for my friends. Pretty good burgers, and plenty of fries to eat afterwards :)
I am not a beer connoisseur but my friends were very happy with all the beer selection they had! I just ordered a double IPA because I was advised to have that.
I especially recommend the Fried Oreos!

I was generally satisfied with my first time at Le Saint Houblon. It’s very well located, the interior design and general atmosphere was very pleasant. The food was good and the portions were generous. The beer was also good, from what I heard they have an agreement with Brasseurs Illimités for their beers.
However, on the bad side, it was hard to know what those beers were. The was no menu, and the waitress couldn’t tell us the choices, so I ended up ordering «well whatever dark and strong beer you have». They do offer a degustation plateau of about 8 different sorts though, but a beer menu would be a good idea.
Our waitress was very kind, but had a few hiccups, such as confusing or forgetting our orders from time to time and was a tad slow. But she was so kind and kept apologizing so it was hard to be mad. The place is relatively new, so I won’t hold it against them. Perhaps it was her first day.
Also we went on a Friday night and the place was packed. You better get there early if you want a place on those busy nights.
Will definitely be back!

Petit nouveau dans le Quartier Latin, une autre micro-​brasserie, près de l’UQAM, coin St-​Denis/​De Maisonneuve, parfaite pour les étudiants après les cours. Leur bière vient des ”Brasseurs illimités” de Ste-​Eustache. L’endroit est encore nouveau, assez terne donc encore des trucs à améliorer, le service, la déco par contre la bière (pinte 6 $) était bonne. Menu correct, exemple; Burger de boeuf brie/​cheddar (12 $). Prix abordables. Je suis arrivé en après-​midi, y’avait pas grand monde et soudainement vers les 18h/​19h, les gens (en grande majorités des étudiants) ont commencés à rentrer à pleins portes, lorsque je suis parti, c’était rempli et très bruyant. J’attendrai quelques temps avant de revenir pour voir l’amélioration, sinon y’a pleins d’autres bonnes micro-​brasseries sympas dans le coin pour étancher votre soif. Wifi gratuit.

Not the best beer in MTL but they have a good selection. Good location, gotta try it!

Super belle soirée au Saint-​Houblon! La nourriture est excellente, particulièrement la poutine au canard. Ils offrent une vaste gamme de cocktails de 1L tout simplement délicieux et abordables. Des bières québécoises de qualité supérieure sont disponibles à un prix plus que raisonnable. Les pintes sont même offertes au prix du verre le mardi. (4 – 5 $ pour une pinte de bière de cette qualité c’est imbattable!) Bref, cela vaut le coup d’aller essayer, pour un restaurant qui vient d’ouvrir c’est impressionnant ce qu’ils ont réussis à faire, je vous le recommande fortement!

Bön! L’endroit vient d’ouvrir et il faut laisser la chance au coureur… Je me promets d’y retourner dans 6 mois à un an, pour voir s’ils sont arrivés à en faire quelque chose de décent.
Mais pour l’instant…
Déjà, il y a l’aménagement… L’espace est très peu convivial, découpé en banquettes, avec des murs de séparation, ce qui rend la communication avec les gens autour à peu près impossible. Ça évoque vaguement une rotisserie St-​Hubert, en plus joli, il faut bien le dire… Autre comparaison avec la célèbre chaine: des télés un peu partout, branchées sur le canal sportif. Pendant une soirée du hockey, je peux comprendre, mais sinon, ça n’est qu’agaçant. Qui aime être bombardé de publicité et d’information sur la carrière de Wayne Gretsky quand il boit sa bière avec ses amis? La musique n’est guère mieux… J’avais l’impression désagréable que quelqu’un avait synthonisé CHOM à la radio… En somme, tous les ingrédients étaient réunis pour créer une ambiance totalement navrante, tout juste bonne pour plaire à des banlieusards n’aimant pas être dérangés dans leurs petites habitudes.
Côté bière, il paraît que la sélection était tellement incroyable que le serveur n’a même pas pu nous la présenter!!! Sérieux! Pas de liste des bières disponibles! Il a donc fallu lui dire qu’on voulait une IPA pour qu’il nous dise ce qu’il avait (il nous a parlé de deux bières, je né sais pas s’ils en avaient d’autres). Seul point positif, quelqu’un m’a dit qu’ils tiennent à peu près tous les produits de Simple Malt, qui est un bon brasseur. Ma IPA était fort convenable…
Finalement, le prix paraissait raisonnable (7 $ la pinte), jusqu’à ce que je réalise que les taxes étaient en sus (donc 8 $ la pinte). C’est cher payé, je trouve, mais il semble que cette escroquerie devienne la norme dans le quartier latin…
Bref, un endroit où on né fait pas de rencontre ni de découverte, et où l’on paie trop cher pour une ambiance morne. Je prédirais sa fermeture dans l’année, s’il n’était situé dans un quartier hautement touristique, fréquenté essentiellement par des gens habitués aux grandes franchises, et qui né rechigneront donc pas en payant cher pour une expérience fade.

Nice selection of craft beers (eventough that all of those listed on the menu aren’t available yet; they do have to build up their inventory), warm atmosphere (all floors and tables made of genuine wood), food is excellent even though the portions could be a bit bigger. I took the «flanc de porc» with the corn/​shrimp salsa. The salsa was incredible and perfectly spicy to my own taste (used to think that in Montréal, anything categorized as spicy isn’t spicy enough… can’t help it, local people are just not used to spicy things). The flanc de porc was crispy, tasty and well cooked. MIAM!
Service was very good. The waiter wasn’t always pushing us to have more beer and the food has been served in about 15 minutes. Just enough to enjoy your first pint.
The second floor is interesting. There are nice spots to either invite a date or for a small business meeting
So, in a nutshell, a food pub that worth the detour. Now, let’s see how they will evolve over time! Will they keep their promises?
