Have you ever been walking around the New Glasgow waterfront on a hot, sunny summer day and think to yourself, «Man, I could go for some carbs and grease.»? Well, that’s basically what happened to me when I saw this little fish and chip truck set up on the marina. As with any fish and chip truck, you’re looking at a menu heavily populated by deep fryer fare — fish and chips, clams, scallops and hot dogs, as well as sides like onion rings, poutine and fried pepperoni. I’m not knocking this type of menu, but if you’re going to do it, then you have to do it right. I went with an order of fish and chips to use what should be their best and most popular dish as a gauge. While I was craving a carb-intense meal, I did choose to dial it back slightly and only go for one piece of fish. Sitting down at one of the picnic tables by the marina’s edge, it a very short wait for my food. Almost… too short. The fish looked normal enough, battered and not breaded, with a sizable pile of hand-cut fries next to it. Alas, this turned out to be one of the weirdest pieces of fish I’ve ever eaten. The batter was perfectly flat and soft with no crunchy air pockets at all, and pulled off from the fish like a greasy, loose skin. It was about as appetizing as it sounds, and I have no idea how you could mess it up to make it that way. The fish itself was cooked nicely, if a bit under seasoned. The fries, while crispy, weren’t nearly good enough to save the meal and needed some salt as well. Unfortunately, the fish in this meal will stick out in my mind more than much better examples I’ve had in my time, and for that, Sea Snack Shack deserves something… I’m just not sure what.
