great little store, but closed in August, will miss Belich hormone– and antibiotic-free meats especially. Nesters to open in the new year.

For a neighbourhood grocery store, the Dollarton Highway Super Valu is pretty awesome. A small bit of biography: I grew up not far from here, and for as long as I can remember there’s been a grocery store in this spot. They’ve changed hands quite a few times over the years, but the present Super Valu really seems to have found a niche by offering all the staples with a focus on natural and organic products. Those Deep Cove hippies sure eat that stuff up. No really, but I’m pleased that the Aero bar impulse buys of old have been supplanted by sublime(and Vancouver-based) Over the Moon chocolate hazelnut truffle bars. And the cans of MGB coffee on which my parents live have been joined by organic, fair trade beans such as Ethical Bean, Kicking Horse, and Saltspring Island. And on and on. I was especially pleased to see Sapadilla cleaning products on the shelves, since that’s a company started by another Deep Cover. The store itself is pretty small, but they manage to pack in a very complete deli section, good meats, and plenty of organic produce. Despite all the changes, though, there’s still a coin-operated horsey ride outside. Yee-haw!
