I used to shop here and the meats were ok. But I wanted to buy some bacon and the management and staff could not even confirm the ingredients and said they would contact their supplier and get back to me. I emailed and called at least 5 to 10 times for this info-I need to know if there is any phosphates or nitrites or colour in the bacon. I get some all natural bacon from a food co-op and it is labeled with the local producer and ingredients. Also this used to be Aubrey’s meats and they changed ownership so they would not have to honour at least a million dollars worth of coupons they sold. I love this place. I come and get my beef, chicken, bacon and sometimes the eggs here. I am regular here and I practically come every other day to get fresh meat. My new thing is to buy fresh meat and consume it either on the day I got it or the next day. Keepin fresh Ya dig. I stopped buying meat at the grocery store because the taste is incomparable. The staff is incredibly warm and helpful and I rave and tell all my friends to come and get their meat from here. Unilocal friends, if you are thinking of a place to buy your meat fresh — then alas look no further. This is the place to go!

Alright Aubrey’s, I defended you and there’s really not much else to say except that this butcher shop has gone the way of The Butchers in Toronto. They ran a Groupon/DealFind/etc promotion and can’t honor the original terms of the conditions. Instead you either paid between $ 50-$ 80 for $ 200 worth of product and now the terms are changed: — We will start redeeming coupons as of May 1st on Wednesdays and Thursdays only. — All purchases will be 1 for 1 with no exceptions. If you purchase $ 50 worth of product, $ 25.00 will be on your coupon and $ 25.00 will be paid in cash/debit/credit card, up to $ 100 total per day. — All original coupons must be presented even if it was transferred to a gift card. — There will be absolutely NO cash refunds. So you get $ 400 worth of product but you need to pay $ 250-$ 280 for it. Normally that’s an alright deal but it’s extremely shady business practice to be doing this. I know Aubrey’s won’t be doing refunds but you can try to contact the company that sold you your deal and see if they will refund the money.

This is a traditional family style butcher in Byward Market. I was at first surprised by the sparse shelves after entering the long shop, set up so that the butcher’s counter is farthermost from the door. They have very few items on display but in the back of the counter is a door leading to the fridge/freezer which show the carcasses of many animals, ready to be butchered for your carnivore pleasure anyway you please. When I was there one of the butchers was explaining to a customer what the difference is between a joint roast and a butt roast, with meat for illustration. Not for the feint of heart or the vegetarian of palette. They are competent and the quality of the meat is good. They also carry some fresh specialty eggs, quail, goose etc. If you are trying to blow your doctor’s head off at your annual physical with your cholesterol numbers, have the goose egg!
