Real talk, my partner and I loooove pub food and have been looking for a go-to place after moving out of Centretown! And some of the stuff on the Black Irish Pub’s menu sounded p great, so we decided to give it a try. ‘Try’ is the key word here! We have tried to eat here twice. The first time it was like eh, whatever i guess, but the second time actively makes me want to warn people away from this place ‘cos wooooow. First time: we come in around…2ish? World Cup’s on the TV and there are some l o u d drunk people at the other end of the bar watching, but the server is super friendly and seats us pretty quick and super apologetically tells us that they’re only serving appetizers atm(iirc the cook wasn’t there?). We leave a little disappointed(‘cos as nice as tapas are we weren’t really in the mood for a plate of nachos or chicken wings or w/e for lunch), but it’s like hey whatever we can try again closer to noon or 5 – 6 or w/e sometime. Second time: Hooo-boy. So we decide to give it another shot today ‘cos it’s more or less on the way home and we’ve both had this l o n g stressful day so it’s like hey, a burger or some fish&chips or something would be nice! We come in like a few minutes to 4 and decide to ask up front if they’re serving dinner food, which… turns out to be the worst possible idea. My partner: «Hi, are you serving a full menu right now?» Owner(I think, based on stuff he said?): «Well, um, let me get you our current menu – « P: «…so, you’re not serving a full menu.» …yeah typing it out that way is kind of annoying and I’m not going to keep it up. Anyways! Long story short, he asks us if this is our first time there and how much money we have(really, dude? how rude is that?), and then he says that maybe something could be arranged, my partner’s just like ehhhh i think we should just go, owner’s like hey wait what specifically do you want, sweetie’s just like«…I want to know if you’re serving a full menu,» and… BADIDEA. WORST. IDEA. This leads to the owner going on this angry rant about how there wasn’t a cook in because INFOURAND A HALFYEARSLITERALLYNOBODYHASORDEREDFOODBEFORE4PM and YOUWANNAKNOWWHOHAS A FULLMENUFAZIO’S KITCHEN(?is this even an actual place) ACROSSTHESTREETTHEYHAVE A FULLMENUTHERE’S A BUFFETRIGHTTHEREWITH A FULLMENUTHERE’S…he rattled off a few more places but you get the idea. He caps it off by saying BYEHAVE A NICEDAYNOW in this super nasty, snotty tone of voice, we don’t stick around. Looking at some recent reviews now(which i guess we should have done earlier but w h o o p s i’m dumb), it seems like this isn’t a one-off and the owner maybe has a problem with being rude and abrasive to customers?(and made nasty comments about customers’ orders, which again, *how rude is that?* who *does* that?) Sooo yeah. There are a *bunch* of pubs in Vanier, and Centretown’s a quick hop on the 14 away. Why patronize the one where you have to worry about getting insulted based on what you order or setting off the owner’s hair-trigger temper and have to play guessing games wrt whether like 2⁄3 of the menu is unavailable?

We were there in mid August and walked in around 6pm on a Friday. The place was almost empty. Just a few patrons sitting at the bar. The waiter greeted us warmly gave us the menu, and took our drink orders. It was our intention to have a bite to eat as we had been traveling for the last 5 hrs. There wasn’t much offered on the menu, but this is after all a Pub, so we could certainly make due with what they offered. The waiter returned with our drinks(good Irish beer) and started taking our order. Everything we ordered, they were out of! Finally the waiter told us that they pretty much ran out of ALL of their food because they were really busy at lunch. What??? On a Friday evening you have no food left? Come one, there’s a grocery story around the corner! And why did the waiter even bother to give us the menu? My thought is that they didn’t have anyone in the kitchen… but whatever… no food. So we finished our beer and went elsewhere cause we were hungry. The two stars are for the good beer and for the good laugh that we had afterwards!

We went over to the Black Irish pub for Lunch. While we did not know what to expect exactly as a restaurant, we were surprisingly happy with the place. We first were greeted by a very friendly and smiling staff. We were shown to a table and were provided with menu for Lunch. We ordered drinks, an Irish apple cider and a Guiness beer. The waiter that helped seemed really proud that they were offering authentic Irish Cider instead of local Cider or Spain Cider. It is, after-all, an Irish Pub. The meal we ordered went beyond our expectations. The Sandwich was delicious and the bread not too dry, not too soft with a pinch of rosemary spices to it. We, however, found the place to be a bit noisy. There were only a few people in the restaurant by the time we got in and still sounded like there was a big crowd. Because it is a pub, I would come to expect it to be noisy, so I would not count that point against the restaurant. I will however point out that for people looking for a quiet place for lunch or dinner, this might not be the best place… Other than that, a Wonderful experience…
