The food here is sensational. They have such a dynamic menu and not too much to choose from. The gyoza, toko, and sushi are too die for! One problem. I have been almost everyday for the past week. The staff are constantly stuffing their faces with food every time I come in and they have no regard for if they eat around the customers or not. It’s unbelievable. Today is Wednesday 1⁄20 and I am here for lunch. The whole staff are stuffing their faces again just sitting on the table next to me(it’s 2:30 — not even lunchtime) and then someone just came out of the kitchen eating! The waitress is just sitting at the table next to me having a chat with a staff member and eating. If this does not bother you, then I definitely recommend this place, if it does, I would not come here. Just think the owners should know. I won’t be back for a while regardless of the food. I tipped the waitress 15% and I think she seemed surprise. What is it these days when people think they don’t have to earn their tip.

Being a purist when it comes to single malts, I prefer them either neat or with a dash of still spring water. Throwing my caution to the wind I plumped for the $ 18 Smokey Old Fashioned at Tomo to start my New Years Eve meal. Ardbeg Isle of Islay Single Malt, blended together with Glenmorangie, a superbly caramelly-sweet Single Malt, with cardomen bitters, orange rind, Angustura Orange bitters and clove syrup served in a bar-fire wood-smoked glass over an iceberg-sized ice cube. An amazing blend of smoke and ice and orange and caramel played across my tongue, whisking me back to the Highlands in an instant. My dining companions Caesar had a rich fulsome texture and it came with a strip of bacon. Nothing wrong with that! We decided to go plate-sharing and ordered a good selection. The Thai spicy curry soup was a beautiful bright thick meaty broth, with shrimp, clams and calamari(perhaps a little too much) with high notes of ginger and spice cut with basil. The signature Tomo roll was eight delectable fresh big pieces of crisp tempura shrimp with masago, spicy mayo, scallion and topped with seared beef. The Spider roll had soft shell crab, cucumber, spicy mayo and big chunks of avocado. Both rolls were bedecked with scallions, white pickled ginger and edible flowers with deliciously tiny Peruvian sweet-drop pickled peppers. Crisp chicken bites were awesome; hot, crisp, fatty plump nuggets of meaty poultry heaven served immediately from the fryer. The fowl was black chicken I was informed, and was not the tasteless white meat nodules you normally get. This is the real deep-fried deal. Next, the Gyoza dumplings are fantastic, sweet, soft, light, pan-fried chicken and vegetables with light scallions, with light sweet teriyaki dipping sauce. The Grilled Duck skewers were good, well cooked enough, with a seven-spice teriyaki Japanese sauce; This plate was perhaps the weakest part of the menu offering tonight. Matt was our very competent server and he did a great job. Dinner for two with drinks was about $ 120 and well, well with it. This is the best fresh sushi-fusion in Ottawa.

Went food hopping with my hubby the other night! We stopped into tomo for a couple of rolls and some duck tataki! The décor of the resto is neat, the service was great and the food was pretty good! I’d recommend this restaurant for their creative rolls :)

Came here for a birthday party last night. First thing they told us, that at 10:30pm it’s bottle service only. Which means for every 4 people, they must buy a bottle of liquor in order to stay. Given our party of 20 people aren’t alcoholics, and were there for dinner and drinks, we were surprised that they were basically kicking us out. It took over 20 mins to get the bill, then someone took my friend’s card and we couldn’t find him for another 20 mins. All the staff seemed stressed. Food was ok. Cocktails good. But nothing spectacular, many other better sushi and cocktail places in Ottawa. This place is not a place that I would ever go back to.

Sushi is very basic — crabsticks, tuna, salmon, and tempura shrimp. Odd menu and not very good. Excellent service though and great to have a beer.

World class sushi in Ottawa??? YES!!! TOMO is one of handful of places I have gone back to two nights in a row. Simply among the best sushi I’ve had worldwide. Super fresh ingredients and beautifully presented. Staff is attentive and personable on both nights. The bar atmosphere is fun, and staff and locals are friendly and welcoming. The room is splendid. Handcrafted furniture and gorgeous lighting create a wonderful environment in which to dine. Eat outside when the weather permits. Highly recommend the Bok Choi, and all of the specialty rolls simply rock. Can’t go wrong here… two nights in a row. Enjoy.

Great Little Japanese place with Sushi and other more Izakaya-style food items. I had the fried octopus balls, which were just melting in my mouth — utter perfection. The big surprise though was the grilled squid I ordered. Not a greasy fried rubbery concoction of a couple of pieces of squid — no, an entire squid grilled to perfect consistency(no rubber!), sliced and served with a sprinkle of sauce. Every bite was heaven.

Came here for drinks around midnight on a Friday night. DJ was spinning mainstream hip-hop, mainly Drake. Overall, nice décor and good looking crowd. Service here was fast enough and there was a good amount of staff tending the bar. I would recommend this place to anyone that is tired of the pub scene in Ottawa and is looking for something more urban and loungey. Willing to give this place a shot for dinner in the near future.

I went there to see what has replaced Wonton Mama(which I loved). I went to Tomo for lunch and ordered 16 pieces of sushi that ended up to be around $ 25. The quality was good, great presentation, but nothing outstanding. For a restaurant in this price rage and cuisine, I would rather go to Kinki. On the other hand, I really liked the service and their recently renovated interior. I would consider coming back for drinks or a dj night, but definitely not for lunch.
