My wife loves the lasagne, but I didn’t care for it. It was basically lasagne noodles in a meat sauce with some mozzarella cheese on top– in other words, like a bowl of spaghetti. I prefer my lasagne with layers of cheese and meat. But it depends on what you like. I also tried the club sandwich, which was fine, except that they asked if I wanted mayonnaise, I said yes, and then they gave me a sandwich with Miracle Whip on it. I don’t care if places want to use Miracle Whip, but I hate it when they try to pass it off as mayonnaise. If it’s Miracle Whip I order something else. When I asked, he said that Helmen’s was too thick for his customers and he’d been using Miracle Whip for years. Overall, a disappointing lunch.

University Tavern is an icon on King Edward Street — it is located in the heart of the Ottawa University section of town and must be a delight for all the students in the neighbourhood. I can imagine a student on a budget loving a place like the University Tavern. It is a no-frills kind of place offering hearty Canadian and Italian foods, such as burgers, pizza and pasta. The prices are student-friendly and the service is quick and efficient — so you can get back to your term paper in no time! I am not sure it would be to every diner’s liking though — it really does take the«frill» out of no frills. The furniture is well-used and the staff is often visible in aprons and such. But, there is no bull and everyone seems to be a straight shooter and good-hearted. If you are okay with simple but delicious food(and occasionally a boisterous atmosphere filled with loud students), give the University Tavern a try.
