This was the second time my Partner and I have come to the Onyx in Port Moody for our anniversary. The first time was so outstanding, that when I told my parents about it, they insisted on taking us there for dinner this year. Right from when we walked in the door the service was amazing. The hostess greeted us with a big smile, offered to take our coats, seated us, and offered water. Perfect. Our server came and greeted us with 2 complimentary glasses of champagne, which was a nice surprise(Apparently my Father told the hostess it was our anniversary). I wish I remembered her name, she was extremely social, pleasant, attentive, and just all around great! We even had another server randomly stop by our table and offer us a congrats with a big smile. The calamari was perfect like last time. No hint of chewy-ness, not greasy, just soft and tasty and delicious. And the home made salt & vinegar chips have now spoiled me on the store bought bags. The Prime Rib we all had basically melted in your mouth. Everyone agreed it was the best they’d ever had. The horseradish was actually spicy(Which it should be). And the veg was a perfect accompaniment, just simply seasoned without taking away from the star(The meat). Sure, the place isn’t cheap, but you get what you pay for. The food is amazing. I’m 5’8″ and 135lbs, not a big guy, and I had an appy and devoured my entire 12oz prime rib. It’s just soooo good. Desert was nice and a perfect wind down with coffee. They even spelled out Happy Anniversary with caramel, which was cute and a nice touch. Thank you Onyx staff for making yet another anniversary dinner amazing!

I’m local to this restaurant. The staff are cordial but there is no pep in their step. The bartender needs to learn how to smile. She’s at one speed. The food was cold and don’t buy the tuna dish. It’s like 3oz on a huge pile of rice. Not worth the money. Food cost must be 22%.

3 strikes and you’re out. First I will say that this is a nice looking restaurant with a side lounge which you can go to if you’re waiting for a table and it has a couple of tv’s in there. I also like the atmosphere, it’s not too stuffy or to casual, and that about where it ends. We’ve been here 3 times and each time there’s been a problem. The first time we ordered a $ 60 bottle of red wine and after I had a tasting and ok’d it they proceeded to pour a glass into my wifes used white wine glass. Unacceptable for a restaurant trying to be viewed as high end. The next time they mixed up the steak orders in that my wife likes hers Medium rare, I like mine rare and chicago. We ordered different steaks and my wifes came rare chicago and mine was med. rare. Next was even worse, this time I ordered my steak medium rare chicago and my steak came blue and not chicago and both my wifes and mine were cold. then they proceeded to mess up the bill by overcharging $ 25 on the bill. There are other little nagging things that disappoint as well, the hostess was very young and inexperienced, unable to pronounce the feature of the day and giggling like she was working at Denny’s. They don’t bring bread to the table. Also the center seating is very tight where you really are sitting so close to the next table you might as well be at the same table. I gave this place a fair chance but won’t be back, for less money you can go to the Keg and get what you order with the service you expect.

Usually I don’t complain about prices unless they’re completely absurd but my husband and I did find this place to be a let down when we stopped in for dinner the other evening. We’d been going past it for years and had kept meaning to go in because the signs outside present this place as being one of the best steak houses in the Lower Mainland. We came here thinking that this would be on par with something impressive. The service WAS very good so absolutely zero issues there at all. But the atmosphere and food were both definitely overrated and overpriced for what they were. I had the salmon and, while it was good, it was indiscernible from my own cooking. My husband had a steak and it was a terrible cut that he didn’t enjoy. The wine was definitely overpriced. I completely understand markups but this was a bit extreme. As for the décor? Again there really was nothing special about it. It looked like your run of the mill eatery. My advice? If they want to keep charging these prices then they need to up the ante and do something to make themselves really stand out. Be bold and memorable. OR align the prices with Milestones or Joey’s. In the meantime you’re going to get a better steak from The Keg.

We thoroughly enjoyed the meal at onyx steakhouse. We both had the filet mignon. Some say it’s overpriced but I think it’s fair value for what you get. The baked Brie we had for an appetizer was really good too! The only complaint I had was the pop seemed watered down, maybe their machine was broken? Also it was really hot inside. Not sure if they had an a/c or not…

I recently dined at Onyx for the first time and I’m on the fence as to whether or not I’d go back. It’s in my neighbourhood, so the location is very convenient, however the food was pretty average. Actually, I take that back — I’ll go back to check out their happy hour — even though it’s only for an hour(4−5pm) they have half-price appies and buck-a-shuck oysters. They seriously need to extend the time until 6pm though. Only one hour? Come on, Onyx. Seriously. Two hours wouldn’t kill you. For my entrée, I ordered the filet mignon(my usual go-to steak) and it was cooked nicely, but nothing overly special for the price($ 34). I also had a side of peppercorn sauce, which I really enjoyed — I just wish there had been more of it! The disappointment came with the side of brussels sprouts — they were waterlogged(from being frozen too long, maybe) so they were mushy and tasteless. The bacon that came with them was really good, but not good enough to save the dish. We ended up sending them back and got a side of sauteed mushrooms instead. Unfortunately, they took too long and arrived as we were taking our last bites of steak. Our server, on the other hand, was excellent. If it weren’t for her, I would’ve rated this place only 2 stars. She was very polite, good sense of humour and attentive without hovering. She made sure we knew about the specials(½ price wine, thankyouverymuch) and even showed us what some of the food looked like as she was serving people outside. For example, because we couldn’t decide what to order, she walked past our table showing the plates she was carrying and saying, «this is what the ribs look like — yummy!» We had a more enjoyable experience because of her.

We tried Onyx on a Saturday night, with a reservation and an Entertainment Book coupon. The Manager served us personally and we saw her check in with the other patrons. The service was excellent! The drink menu was interesting with innovative martinis and they have a excellent wine selection. We had the steak which was tender and cooked exactly to order and a seafood dish that was just ok. We did feel that the ambiance was too noisy with tables that are too tightly packed together. We felt like we were enjoying dinner with the couple at the table next to us. The main criticism for Onyx was the value. Our date night dinner was far too expensive for what we got, even with our coupon! It’s not likely that we’ll go back.

Came for a date night, and was not impressed. I wouldn’t recommend this business as its not worth the prices or more importantly the customer experience. Our host was nice, and seated us immediately. Our drinks came fairly quickly after ordering. Without repeating the what most reviews already state the rest of the evening was not good. In summary our drinks after the first order were slow. I was drinking a double neat bourbon. I pre ordered it before my meal came to time with my Prime Rib. It took 15 minutes for it to arrive well after my meal. It’s a pour into a glass and bring it out deal ya know. Our appetizer was slow to arrive. My meal was incorrect and I had to request the side I ordered in lieu of the mash potatoes. The wifi signal wasn’t strong enough to complete the payment outside .The two tables around us had their orders brought out incorrectly and not to quality. All above was acknowledged by our server. Felt bad for her cause she was doing her best. We still gave her an 18% tip. The kitchen was apparently busy due to a party of 50. I’ve experienced worse but this will definitely be a one time only, never again experience. It’s not remotely worth the prices as the food is good, nothing to be amazed by, but the customer experience was just so sub par. UPDATE Nicholas contacted us after our review, and we had a great conversation. He acknowledged that the evening was a challenging one, and invited us to return to give another try. He offered us a $ 50 Gift Card towards the next visit. Though this wasn’t necessary, it was appreciated how quickly Onyx leadership contacted us to allow us to provide feedback. Based on this I certainly intend to give Onyx Steakhouse another chance.

I have been here a bunch of times and I can tell you I am not surprised at the amount of mediocre/negative reviews on it. That is definitely not a coincidental case. The first problem with this place is the food and beverage prices. Gotham steakhouse prices for steak that is probably half as decent and more on par with something like The Keg? The rub, yes, I can see why people would not like it. Not sure why they insist on putting that on mostly everything. The alcohol is stupidly overpriced. No way should someone be subject to paying downtown-esque or Rogers Arena-esque prices for beverages at a restaurant in the middle of Suterbrooke/Port Moody. The service, pretty slow indeed. I would say most of the servers are genuinely friendly though. The restaurant décor is nice all around but that’s only a fraction of the equation when rating a restaurant. Last time I came here I had the prime rib as well as lobster mac n’ cheese and got violently ill from it along with the person I was with who had the same thing. Haven’t come back since then and I’ve only heard bad things in regards to service/management. If you want a steakhouse, just go to the keg, seriously. Even venturing out a bit to find a better area or even heading to Browns or the Wells down the street. Far superior and reasonably priced places. You’d think it’s an inside joke reading the menu prices at this establishment.

Understand it’s Valentine’s Day, but that is not a surprise that it’ll be busy… Service is much slower than it needs to be, albeit the service did get, was pleasant.

Ate there once. Everything we had was so-so. But considering the price that they are charging, I was hoping for a lot more. That was our second attempt to eat there. The first time, we were with our young children and was told that there were no high chairs for us. Message sent. Second time, the experience didn’t justify the cost. There will be no third time.

Went in for dinner tonight and found out Wednesday are Buck a Shuck oysters, so ended up ordering sparking wine and oyster to start, so so good. Followed it with a NY steak with mashed potatoes and vegetables, my boyfriend had the Salmon with gnocchi. The mashed potatoes were to die for and the steak was cooked perfectly. I think are servers name was Shy, she was great. Will be back soon, most likely next Wednesday for more oyster and cocktails

I would really love to give this place a higher rating but for what you pay, it’s not much better than other restaurants in the area. Love The setting, location and vibe but the food and service was pretty average. I had the lobster sirloin steak special and everything including the veggies was just caked in sauce and so buttery and salty. A little overdone for my liking

We bought a Travelzoo voucher and then we read some reviews that did not claim that this place was that great, but we had an absolutely fantastic evening. Although it was slightly understaffed we were well taken care of. The appetizers were far beyond our expectations, and our steaks were as good as black & blue downtown Vancouver. The onion rings were the best onion rings I’ve ever eaten in my entire life. Great drinks, great atmosphere, great overall experience. I would actually return to this establishment over black & blue or Italian kitchen. It was far more personable. Justin knows his wines. We will definitely be back and our expectations were far surpassed. Don’t forget to order sauce with your steak.

I booked my reservation using their website, which uses Opentable. When I got a survey after the dinner from Opentable, I responded with what I thought was a fair and accurate review of the events of the evening. It somehow never made it to the Opentable website, leaving me to think that the restaurant gets to review the«after dinner survey» before it hits the Opentable website, and if so, somehow my review did not«pass». Guess what Onyx? There are several restaurant reviewing platforms out there, and this one is bigger than Opentable. A bunch of folks in various departments of my company had staff Christmas dinners recently. Other departments went to such solid venues as Chambar, and other high end restaurants downtown. Being located in Coquitlam, I wanted to patronize a local restaurant, and keep our money in the community, so we chose Onyx. From what little I knew, they had steaks and good drinks. Perfect for a staff party. There were 7 of us, and we reserved for 6 pm on the 10th of December. When we arrived, the place looked great, they spent a lot of money making this place look fabulous. We ordered drinks, and I wanted to order wine, but the choices were not great, and very expensive. I like the idea of helping the BC wine industry, but when you price your wines like they did at Onyx, I ordered beer, From Holland. We ordered a bucket load of appetizers — yam fries, 2 orders of tempura bacon, chicken wings, poutine, calamari, and if I recall a crab cake, though I did not try that. The wings were overcooked, but not really that bad, the calamari was the same as earls/keg/cactus/joey’s etc. The tempura bacon was actually really good — we had thought it could be a grease slick, but it was not. The only advice I could offer is thick cut bacon would really improve the dish. The rest were not memorable, especially the poutine, which had a strange tasting gravy. Out of a can I expect. I gave in and ordered a glass of wine, which came promptly. Most of us ordered the 16 oz. bone in rib-eye. In fact, we had been anticipating it since we made our reservations, I think 6 of the 7 of us ordered it. The
