First Japanese restaurant I’ve eaten in Red Deer. I found 3 through Unilocal but decided to eat at Sushi Maru as it was the most North and on my way back to Edmonton. Came around 11:30am when they opened and was greeted by the waitress who had a welcoming and friendly smile. She was very attentive and checked up on me often so a positive for customer service. I started with their Ebi Sunomono. It was quite plain and simple, definitely expected more for a $ 4.50 appetizer. Not a problem though because I did enjoy the sushi. Recommend the Salamander roll or if you want something light and refreshing have the salmon roll with cream cheese. Their salmon roll alone was fantastic as well. Will definitely come back here again.

ehhh ive had a decent amount of sushi but this was extremely westernized and ive eaten at a flipping montreal based and created sushi franshise before. toooo much rice bland flavour or too much flavour. too much sauce on specialty rolls pretty sure i got a small bout of food poisoning from the oyster roll or spicy salmon roll. My stomach was turning within hours after eating there i ended up puking. service was slow. these rolls do Not take that long to make when there was only two of us in the damn place. price wasnt good for the quality. i definitly do not plan to go back. and i was so excited about it too… its a shame they arent good lol

The service was average here, considering how empty the restaurant was I expected us to get a little more attention from the server. However, she was very nice and friendly and cute so I do feel bad, but it was definitely a slow meal. The menu is a bit westernized, with burgers and fries included amongst the rolls and sushi. I guess this business is really out of the way for most people so it’s a safe bet to have western and Japanese dishes. The sashimi was average freshness, the rolls were average creativity with a bit too much rice and too much emphasis on California rolls. I was a bit disappointed, as I hoped it would be a bit of a mix between Korean and Japanese instead of Japanese and Western. But anyway, cute little set up with lots of booths and friendly staff.
