Needed a greasy spoon breakfast fix this morning and didn’t feel like spending a fortune at Egg Smart. How can you beat eggs and peameal for under 8 bucks? Eggs cooked right to order, and the bacon was great. Coffee was weak, but it always is in a diner. Hash browns probably could have cooked for another minute. Lots of food for a reasonable price. Cheap bottled orange juice is probably my only real complaint. Don’t come looking for a fancy joint… Things here probably haven’t changed since the place opened when Richmond Hill was the wild west. But if you need a diner breakfast fix, this is a good place to stop.

This is the greasiest of the greasy spoon diners I’ve been to so far. The ripped faux leather seating and the cheap wallpaper give the place a very grim character. Big Daddy’s is situated in Richmond Hill’s industrial heartland, adjacent to Apotex and near the train tracks. Driving through this area always reminds me of the Sopranos opening theme! The patron demographic ranges from retirees to tradesmen, with a family or two in the mix on the weekends. Now, there is not much you can you can get wrong with a regular egg and sausage breakfast, or so I thought! The home fries tasted very starchy and were more baked than crispy. The sunny side up eggs had tremendous amount of snot, for lack of a better term. And as I bit into the sausages, I felt bits and pieces with a cartilaginous texture. Everything was super greasy! I think I could have squeezed out a cup of butter from just about anything on my plate. The service, on the other hand, was top-notch. The waiter must have came by five, six times to top off my coffee. It is very clear that Daddy’s isn’t out there to look pretty and please the masses. In fact, I think very few Richmond Hillians know about this place. They’ve been doing quite well with their regular crowd for a long time now, and I’d imagine they will continue to do so for some time to come. For me, it just didn’t do it.
