Double Double is located at Empire Plaza. This place is ghetto good and I rarely see places that are fairly priced with quality anymore. Of course renovations aren’t like 5 star hotels, but good enough and relatively tidy and clean with booths and tables. They have all the Cantonese yummy food on the menu ranging from snacks, noodles, rice and specialty items etc. I usually get their hot sweetened soy milk with fried donut(both long and sweet kinds), congee, steamed rice rolls and radish cakes for lunch time. This place gets pretty busy so be prepared for line-ups. You can just go in and put your name down and then go walk around the super market next door for 15 – 20 mins and come back. If you really don’t want to wait for a table, you can always share a big table with strangers(yes that’s what people do in Asia). Parking there is a bit difficult as many people come and go unless you don’t mind parking at their roof parkade.

Tried this place for the first time and my experience was pretty good. I came here on a thursday night and it wasn’t busy at all like others have mentioned. Ordered the double double beef brisket noodle soup and loved it. The soup was really good and the brisket was tasty. The Chinese donut wrapped in rice roll was pretty good. No complains there. Also ordered the beef rice roll and enjoyed it. The shrimp dumplings on the other hand were a disappointment. The soup it was in wasn’t very good and the dumpling was falling apart and the flavour wasn’t there. Overall I had a good experience and would definitely come back to try their other items next time.

Double Double is one of those places you probably wouldn’t know about(especially if you’re from outside Richmond) unless a friend or a friend of a friend has mentioned it to you. Aside from the plethora of Chinese dishes available throughout Richmond, as well as Vancouver, Double Double, I think, excels at their Congee offerings and their Chinese donuts. My friends brought me here so in terms of what we ordered, was because apparently they were the most popular. I have tried other congee from places like at Kirin Starlight Casino or at Congee Noodle King on Kingsway and Double Double comes out to be the«freshest» and«cleanest» taste. What I mean by that is by no means that they looked microwaved or cooked days ago but I mean that the taste reminds me of those soup your mother would cook so you feel better. Since this place is very busy don’t expect to be always looked after. You have to hound the servers if you want a refill of that tea or request whatever it is you need. Overall I’d be back at this place only if I my Chinese buddies and buddettes are with me.

Awesome Cantonese congee and accompanying dishes. Always fresh greasy products. Oil sticks/Chinese donuts, «Ox tongue» donuts, sesame balls. Then the rice rolls of all kinds. I recommend the crispy minced beef congee, classic like they make in Hong Kong market hawkers. Rice rolls are excellent, match the congee with the Chinese donut inside. I also like the salt and pepper silverfish. Wok-fried radish cake w/XO sauce. All good things.

Things we ordered: XO fried radish cake, chinese doughnut wrapped in a rice roll(zhaliang), parsley and pork rice roll, century egg and pork congee, and a sweet chinese doughnut. Service here is very efficient; I wouldn’t say the staff is rude, but definitely very minimalistic. The XO radish cakes came out fresh and piping — I burned my tongue but it was still worth the crispy coating and soft interior. But honestly, save your change and just get the regular radish cakes since I suspect that they’re probably of the same calibre. The congee was more like a gruel as you couldn’t really see the grains of rice that usually visible in congee, but still tasty. Double double certainly lives up to its name by doubling the amount of pork that’s usually added, the ratio of pork to century egg was somewhere along the lines of 2:1. The sweet doughnut was nothing special, could have been improved with more sesame seeds on top. The zhaliang, on the other hand, was pretty good. The plate came out with 4 rows rather than the 2 that I was expecting, it’s a monster portion for a tiny price. Parsley with any kind of protein is a natural match, IMO. So the rice rolls were delicious. The only gripe I have would be the fact that the pork was really fatty, but I guess that adds to the flavour? I was kind of disappointed that the doughnut man that others mentioned didn’t make an appearance for the entire duration that I was there. Maybe next time. All in all: decent place for some grub with okay pricing.

I heard of this resto from a guy, he raves about the chinese donut. He said, it is sooo good. I wanted to try it, asap. We attempted once, but the parking is beyong horrible!!! Finally, i went there last Friday. I was excited, it was cold and it calls for congee, chinese donut pair. Well, it is a CASH only resto and the waitress automatically told me when i went in, that she doesn’t speak english… oh !!! That won’t hinder me to taste the crunchy, tasty donut dipped into my steamy hot congee. I was seated, after she asked a couple if i could share their table. mind you they are not full packed. After i decided what to order, i tried getting the attention of the waitress. She was avoiding me whenever i call her, what? When she came to the table, i gave her the numbers of my order. It worked! I got hong kong style congee, salted Chinese donut and pork liver and parsley rice roll. I never got to take photos when the food arrived. i was so hungry and everything was delicious. I cant finish the congee and donut, so i decided to eat all rice was really good. On my last bite of the rice roll, i was savouring each bite. Then, i chewed on something hard, ooppps a pebble i thought. I checked what it was… A small metal bead!!! I stood up went to the guy by the cashier and gave it to him. I should have taken a photo. I asked for the bill, i was sooo disappointed !!! He removed the rice roll from the bill… but still, that is metal what if i swallowed it or my tooth broke when i chewed on it. I told hime, please make sure you check your food prep. Will i go back? Not now…

It’s a shame because I truly love the food here. My first time here was with Phils fam and we ordered a bunch of food, like chinese donuts, congee, sticky rice, etc. I loved it. Everything was delicious. Second time, I went there was with my bro, food was good but the service was not. I know they are a busy restaurant but some things are not meant for forgetting. Once we sat down, we made our food order really quick because we were sharing a table and we don’t want to hog it for too long. Usual restaurants give out tea when you sit down, but we were not. I asked them 4 times for tea but nobody EVER gave us any. Till the end when we were literally done our food and asked for the bill, we never ended up getting tea. The strangers who we were sharing a table with were also very disappointed and mad at the fact we were not served. It was really hard to wave them down too because they would walk really fast and not look our way. The food is great but the service is just not worth it. I was telling people, yes this place has great food and was recommending people to come here after my first experience. But i just want to let people know, PLS do not expect much coming out from the service here because it is literally crap. Unless you go on a good day where they actually feel like helping you, then it must be your lucky day. I don’t think I will go here again because: A) long line up B) HORRIBLE service C) Parking lot is ALWAYS full & filled with bad drivers.unfortunately. D) Restaurant isnt the cleanest. So after trying it, yes the food I thought was good but I just can’t get over the fact we were so poorly treated when we went the second time. –Jess from Domoiscraving

I came here with some friends because two of them love this place. I figured I would give it a shot even though I knew I wouldn’t be blown away. We ordered the deep fried wonton, which I thought was actually pretty good. Nice filling, crispy. Two fried rice. One was the bbq duck with dried veg. This was actually pretty good but portion was small. The other fried rice was the scallop and seafood which I really liked, but it wasn’t anything special as I have had this elsewhere and it tastes the same. Regular wonton soup, nothing special. Some sort of pork noodle that my friend loves. i think it was the stomache lining of the pig and it was nasty. I don’t know how he could like it. Oyster pancake *rip off*.barely any oysters and more of a flat egg pancake then anything. Service was not great either. I asked the waitress maybe 5 times for ice water and they never came back with it. Overall. I don’t think I will ever come back. Sorry. not worth my drive to Richmond. and even if I lived there I wouldn’t go back. There are better restaurants.

Came here on a Saturday afternoon and guess what? They ran out of chinese doughnuts! Isnt this what theyre known for? My parents were pretty disappointed of course but we got over it. We got 3 different types of congee(fish, pork and preserved egg, and ground beef). I loved all the congees. So flavorful, nice thick texture, and good portion. We also ordered crispy chicken chow mein, honey garlic spareribs, and the sweet chinese doughnut. This is your standard chinese fare but it is slightly above average. I would definitely come back here if my parents wanted :)

If it wasn’t for their slow service and constantly having to tell them what we wanted I would have given this place a 5 star. Anyways, was here one night with my boyfrd’s family because we heard this place was really good. As their Chinese name stated, they are famous for their Chinese Doughnut. Yummy! We ordered a full table worth of food which were all really good. Nothing to complain about with the food. We got the sweet Chinese Doughnut wrapped with rice noodle to start(was too hungry to take photos). Man, that was the bomb. It’s not something we can find somewhere else and I’m not even sure what it is called to be exact. We ordered the regular chinese doughnut to put in our congee. We ordered 2 different kind of congee. A chicken one and this other one that I don’t remember what it was called. We ordered a noodle and soup dish which was pretty good. It was pretty much what I expect it to be. And we order a bunch of smaller dishes. I also tried out one of their special drinks which was the cream soda with mango ice cream. It was so good. It was like an ice cream float. I recall it costing 4.00. Which wasn’t bad at all considering it was real mango ice cream probably from t and t. hehe. Though next time I might tell them no ice because the ice got in the way and when I was done my drink still had a cup full of ice. Now let me talk to you about service. I personally never expect too much from a Chinese place. Just let me order, get me my food and give me my bill kinda thing. Well that one night, I’m sure this doesn’t happen everyday but we asked the same short hair female waitress for 6 glasses of water like 2 — 3 times and she keeps on saying ya I’ll get it for you. Never happened and instead she started to serve another table. A table of 6 who were drinking. I understand that their bill will be bigger than our’s but how hard is it to either tell someone else to get us the water instead of brushing us off. When it came to order she brushed us off twice. After that we decided to ask the gentlemen who were working to get our order, get our water and add stuff on the bill. I noticed one thing is when they bring you the fresh deep fried stuff, they cut it right in front of you. Throughout the night, that place wasn’t fully packed but yet we still had to tell them to double check our order and make sure the food is still coming. So, that whole part I was unimpressed. But cause the food is good I can look pass it. I recommend others to come try the place out and you will know how good the food is but maybe not get the short hair lady to serve you. She’ll probably brush you off if you don’t look rich or if you look like you won’t tip well. Then again I’m sure the tips are pooled together anyways.

I don’t know how this place does business but I will state the service is one of the worst I’ve ever seen. This place epitomizes the stigma of corruption and nepotism at its best. What I mean by this is the waiters/waitresses only cause stress for themselves when they entertain friends/family/big tippers to tables first and say«oh they reserved a table already», when they clearly did not. If you organize yourselves, serve in a proper order and fairly, the other guests would not be shouting at you or equally pulling tricks to get seated first. I will give an extra star that the food does resemble the food in Hong Kong… but honestly, the owners, like a lot of immigrants from Hong Kong need to keep up with the times… even in Hong Kong they’re using Open-table like apps, and organize waiting lists via a tablet, etc. I have hope in this place, but they’ll really need to spiff up their service, transparency to match their food.

I might have finally found a place that competes directly with Congee Noodle House. The food is fresh and tasty. I like the variety of congee and homemade rice noodles. They offer a number of combinations that I don’t see too often such as congee with basa fish and watercress and about a dozen different rice rolls. The congee had a very nice silky texture. And yes, their Chinese donuts are done just right: crispy outside, moist inside and not chewy(hate the ones that feel like you’re eating jerky). The restaurant itself is nice and clean. The staff friendly enough for this type of cuisine. While I enjoyed the muzak playing over their sound system it was still a little odd listening to 70’s hits like Smoke Gets In Your Eyes and Sealed With a Kiss while slurping my congee ;-)

One of my favorite places for lunch. I love their congee and Chinese donuts(not a big fan of their sweet one). Prepare yourself for waits if you go at prime time lunch/dinner.

Tried the dinner here. Very decent food for the price. Fatty pork rice soup — nice and creamy. Rice in the soup is a nice touch. Deep fried wonton — nice portions of filling inside. Fresh and crispy. Stir fried vegetables with garlic — nice flavour. Sweet and sour pork — this place uses lychees as well as pineapple. Actually works quite nicely. Broccoli with cod — nice big chunks of meat. Broccoli was fresh and crisp. Fried rice — sprinkled with peanuts on top. Again, works very nicely. All of that food was only $ 70 or so after tax and tip — less than $ 15 per person and we all left stuffed. Value definitely comes to mind. I will be back. Recommended.

This place is legit. I came here on Monday night for dinner after strolling by earlier in the afternoon and seeing the place was packed. It was a rainy Vancouver night so a bowl of congee sounded perfect! No wait at about 7 p.m. but the restaurant wasn’t exactly deserted. I opted for a bowl of congee with pork, pork stomach and liver. I also got the fried Chinese donut and a order of the bbq pork and duck liver rice roll. Pig much? Oink. The congee came out a bit thicker than I’m used to but extremely flavorful with a rich base. The ingredients were fresh. I did find the pork a bit fatty. The liver and stomach were on point. They also added peanuts, which is key to the perfect bowl of congee as well as sliced scallions. The rice roll was yummy too. I rarely get to have duck liver generally let alone in a rice roll. There was about fifty-fifty bbq pork versus duck liver. It really added a lot of flavor — deep, smoky, and rich — to an otherwise ordinary rice roll dish. Finally the donut was what they were supposed to be known for. Apparently they have a frying schedule — they’re that precise. Make sure to ask if you want it fresh. They also call it out as they’re doing it which is kind of fun. It is a big donut which justifies the price. It is good but I was probably least impressed with this dish. It did seem really popular — people were ordering it to go like loaves of French baguettes. Service: average. Nothing too hit or miss. You do have to ask for refills on your tea. I also saw as I was eating that the HK sweet and sour pork as well as the Chan’s village noodle looked really good. Oh well — next time! Bottom line: grab a bowl of congee and a Chinese donut here. Maybe even a rice roll if you have the appetite!

This place is famous for their chinese doughnuts! In chinese their name means«Old Chinese Doughnut.» Certainly more appropriate than double double, ha. Their congee is awesome too! Even the«small» size comes in a huge bowl! The congee is so flavourful, thick, and full or ingredients! The chinese doughnuts are made to order so they’re crispy, hot and oh so delish! I also tried their rice rolls, not bad, but not the best either. They also have a ton of other typical HK style brunch dishes. Come early because this place is popular for breakfast!

Yes, a bit high for a Chinese QSR but it’s actually better than a No.9, at least the congee’s more ‘meatier’, thicker, and more generous with its green onions. But the donut is a bit average, think the bakeries are better for that. Honey Garlic spareribs are definitely yummy, fresh meat, thick too, and enough honey sauce to dip in. Could use a bit more garlic bits like Timmy’s at Steveston Village, but i’ll be a happy return customer. Believe it or not, you actually have to make reservations. It’s not a fancy place, like a No.9 but a lot smaller, yet quite busy not surprisingly on a Saturday. Located in the Empire plaza so you know the parking sucks. Cash only. Good size place, and much better food than a bbt place, in my humble opinion.

Double double? I wouldn’t mistake this place as a Tim Horton’s, because the food they serve is Chinese comfort food. Think Congee Noodle House, but the Richmond edition. Ok, they don’t operate into the late hours that Congee Noodle House does, but they do have much better congee. We came here post Unilocal event, and was craving for some good congee. I love to see the selection of the hand rolled rice rolls here. It’s not that common at restaurants now. We shared the salt & pepper squid, the XO sauce fried rice rolls, plain rice rolls, a Double Double house special fried rice, and a fish congee. The rice rolls were soft and thin, just the way they should be. I especially like it plain, with the peanut butter and the sweet sauce, with a sprinkle of sesame seeds. The congee is thicker than what I’m accustomed to, but it has a smooth texture and didn’t seem to have too much MSG. Service was surprsingly good for a Chinese spot. Prices are very reasonable. One downside is that they do close at 10pm, so no late night eats here.

Today I tried rice roll with cilantro, fresh mushrooms, and century egg in rice rolls served with sweet soy sauce. Sigh… it was out of this world. I think this is my new favorite snack. I wasn’t in the mood for something oily like the deep fried Chinese donuts in my rice rolls, instead I was looking for something light to snack on and bam… there it was. The rice rolls were fresh and bouncy as usual, the combination of the trio ingredients somehow worked beautifully. I ordered a small pork stomach soup with white pepper. I loved it. For $ 4.25 I just want to dump a bowl of rice in my soup and that would be a meal. I didn’t though because I ordered the rice rolls. The soup was deep and flavorful. I enjoyed the spiciness of the white peppers and the sourness of the pickled mustard cabbage. Pork stomach bits were cooked to my liking — still had a chew but not gummy and flavorless. Gosh I love this place.

Typical Wonton Congee Noodle place in Richmond in the Empire Centre. Parking is a zoo today, I would suggest park in the parking structure at the East side of the entrance and not try to look for a service spot. They have hand roll rice rolls here — they are really good, Their name in Chinese is ‘Olé Chinese Donut’ — suppose to be in the style of the HK Food Stalls from the 60s and 70s. The Chinese Donut is pretty good. I had the Seaweed Beef Balls Noodle, and my friends had the Spicy Pork Dry Noodles and the Brisket Noodles. We finished with the Fresh Hand Grounded Black Sesame Soup, which is my favorite dessert. Not too sweet at all.
