Ramaker’s. What to say. Its a Dutch Store. Literally. Located in St Catherine’s, its a small Dutch store just a mile or so from the QEW. You’ll pass a TH on the way, so perfect place to stop on the way to Toronto, grab a coffee and stock up on some Dutch treats. Now, you ask, what’s a Dutch Store. well, its a store that has an inventory for all but mostly Dutch things. That means, lots of fresh stroopwaffels(which are those great waffle pattern cookies with syrup in the middle), to Oude Gouda, which is seriously aged Gouda, straight from The Netherlands. They have other cookies of course, and other cheeses as well. Never mind the endless aisle of Dutch candies which you buy by weight, so you choose how many you want. They carry typical Dutch peppermints and eucalyptus treats and licorice(Dutch licorice, indescribable otherwise), to Biscuitijes(I think called Rusk here, but these are from Holland and taste better than what you find at Wegmans), to cured meats, to Dutch Happy hour snack, which are terrific if you have not had them. And of course Herring, for those in the know, you know what I’m talking about. There is a pretty solid selection of Indonesian things as well, so if you are looking for those spices and the like, you will find them here. Also various Indonesian treats the Dutch have adopted as their own. Also found here are lots of Dutch books, calendars, various typically Dutch pictures, think windmills etc. We’ve never purchased any of those. We go for the food. They are owned/run by a Dutch woman, and some of the employees there speak Dutch, but not all I think. But you will see both Dutch and non-Dutch shopping there. They have easy parking in front of the store. They take US and Canadian 1 to 1, so no worries there. They also take credit. At the border, just have your receipt ready to show the Customs people, we never have any issues, but good to have it on hand. Many of them know«The Dutch Store» as well, and often say to us «yes, lots of people go there». Closed Sundays.

Huge selection of Dutch items. What they can import from the Netherlands and Belgium they will, but you will see some local items like Voortmans. Horse meat sourced locally from Roos meats, huge selections of imported Dutch cheeses, speculaas, kruidnoten during Christmas, smoked herring and mackerel(sadly no paling), breads(not made in-house sadly), imported pastries, chocolates(Droste!!) and cookies, butt-loads of licorice, Douwe Egbert coffee(one of my faves!), de Ruijters sprinkles and also a good selection of Indonesian items. They also have a really friendly staff! This is my go-to place for all my Dutch needs.

I am half Dutch(Mom was born in the northern part of the Netherlands) and I love this store! It, quite honestly, helped with my homesickness when I moved away from home for Uni at 19. Their selection is incredible, both food(a great selection of traditionally dutch food as well as Indonesian and, more recently, South African) and a selection of Dutch language books, kitchen stuff and other misc products. And the price? Really reasonable! Oh and here is the kicker… remember that Mom I mentioned earlier? Every time they visit or I go stateside, a Ramaker’s visit or care package is mandatory(and my family isn’t that far from Holland, Michigan). Go here! Buy food! Buy stuff! Buy me a pair of klompen slippers while you’re at it ;)
