We love visiting JJ’s in the summer each week at the North Vancouver Shipyards night market. It’s great value to order one of the big plates: bbq pork or lemongrass chicken served up with garlic rice and a fried egg for under ten bucks. We also enjoy the vegan market bowls, filled with delicious veggies and beans. There’s also a great market juice blend drink which is fresh and delicious. There might be more exotic foods on offer but when it comes to quantity and value, JJs is our pick!

Saucy and tasty, the halfer mix is a good portion. Meat packs a lot of flavor, and is well marinated throughout. Chicken was tender, Filipino pork was fatty but good. The chili vinegar sauce was tangy and a great compliment to the protein. Lineup at the truck wasn’t too long, and food came out promptly. Price wasn’t bad either(under 15 bucks). Fried egg broken on the rice tops everything off nicely. Simple, tasty, and filling!

Really good Filipino food according to my Fili friend, and really tasty and generously portioned food according to my taste buds and stomach. Succulent meat and greasy, garlicky fried rice — who doesn’t love that? The first time I had it, I just kept on eating even though I hit the barfing point before I could even finish the thing. It was too good to put the fork down! #NoRegret

I don’t understand some of the negative reviews on here. Grabbed a ‘halfer’ plate which consists of a heaping qty of bbq pork and lemon grass chicken with garlic fried rice and a fried egg on top. The delicious vinegar sauce on the side was the perfect accompaniment. I’m not normally a rice eater but the whole plate came together so nicely, it was hard to resist. Ended up eTing everything! These guys are at the Winters farmers market in riley park each Saturday. Definitely a must try for those who miss the Hawaiian loco plates

The Market bowl is awesome. Next time I’ll ask for ½ the sauce. Otherwise, it’s great value for your money.

JJ’s, JJ’s, JJ’s…I shake my head in disappointment with the changes that have been done to your cart. I’ve been a loyal fan for about a year when I finally tracked you down in the Nate Bailey’s Famer’s Market after you sold out during the Art Gallery Food Truck Fest. I’ve returned a few times, always ordering the Pork and Garlic Rice dish and WAS always happy because you guys have passion, your food is great and priced very reasonably. I WAS your #1 fan — I’ve even convinced a good handful of my friends to be JJ’s fans. I was one of the Unilocalers at the Food Cart Fest — during the previews. My goal that day was to sing praises to you and to sample your rice bowl so that I can order a basketful of dishes from you for myself and my friends. But boy, was I disappointed. Some vendors were eagerly chatting about their food and passion and generously sharing samples. Others were talking about their food but had no samples, which was understandable — it’s a business in the end and it’s ok to not give samples. Just be up front about it. I love to chat about food… but not to be taken to be a fool. —— Be honest with me and my fellow Unilocalers! — — — – But you, JJ’s, had a grill malfunction from 11am to 11:59am(exactly the time when the previews/sampling were happening). That same grill malfunction was miraculously resolved at 12:00pm when the previews/sampling ended. A few of my friends actually walked up to you for samples at 11:50am and you said you guys were waiting for a technician to come fix your grill and that it was still ‘dead’. We were sitting at the table right across from your truck and we saw everything. We saw no technician arriving in the 10 minutes before noon, but the grill was fixed right at 12:00pm. You took orders right at 12:00pm when paying customers came and food came out fast and furious at within minutes like it was just waiting for paying customers. Don’t be dishonest. Be upfront about it. Seriously. — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — - –_-« Now, JJ’s, your Pork Rice dish went up in price by a good 16% in two months. The cut of pork has however gotten worse(it is very fatty and this comes from a person who LOVES fatty bits). The garlic rice also somehow lost the fragrance and had less minced garlic in it. Even though you pulled free sample shenanigans, I bought 4BOXES of rice box because I truly liked you, but I ended up throwing half my meat away because they were SOO very fat. At $ 9.50, I can get yummy perogies from Holy Perogies, 3.5 burgers from the $ 2.85 Burger Truck, 2 to 3 Johnny’s nom-worthy Popsicles, to-die-for salted caramel waffles from Yolk etc… No real bang for my buck anymore — unless I feel like gaining 5lbs in my hip area from eating all the fat. Max’s, Kumara, OngPin, Julibee will be where I’ll venture off to now for Filipino food. I’m so sad . I just heard about the other Filipino Food Truck, FlipTop Filipino Fusion. I’ll check them out very soon.

For the past two years I have been invited to Unilocal’s Elite Food Truck Festival Preview and allowed to sample all food truck fare, for free. The doors opened one hour prior to public access and dozens of Unilocalers descended upon the trucks like vultures to wounded voles. We only had one hour to eat as much as we could and with over 50 attendees and 15 trucks, small lines formed at each cart. I was worried about not being able to try everything, but I managed to try 14 of the 15 vendors. No wonder I had never heard of JJ’s Trucketeria! It’s based in Surrey. The land that culture forgot. Just kidding, just kidding. Actually, I’m not. Surrey has food trucks? JJ’s creates Filipino fare that includes Lemongrass Chicken and Garlic Fried Rice. They were offering their Vegan Market Bowl at the Unilocal event. My first reaction was«Wow! Big portion! Tangy curry sauce!» which was quickly followed by my secondary reaction of «Meh. It’s just rice and veggies. Not enough sauce.» The large Filipino dudes that own this truck are jolly and obviously passionate about food, but their menu options and presentation are average. I wouldn’t pay to eat here.

I am always on the hunt for cheap street eats. This big, bright yellow truck delivers in spades for value & execution! Their specialty: seasonal Filipino-inspired comfort food, culturally remixed in format & flavour. Stalk them on Twitter or follow your nose. Because you can smell the intoxicating aroma of sizzling meat from a block away! Juicy & marinated to saturation, you can’t pick a bad one. Mumbai curry chicken — not spicy. Sriracha it up if you want! Filipino BBQ pork — explosive flavour. Could edit out the gristly bits. Grilled lemongrass chicken — tender & tasty. Signature Panwiches($ 5): — grilled meat + coleslaw + pan de sal(fluffy, slightly sweet Filipino buns) — Mt. Everest meat portions makes for a knife & fork situation. Garlic Fried Rice Big Plate($ 7): — grilled meat of your choice + coleslaw + gfr + a fried egg — gfr: mildly garlicky, tacky in texture… in a good way! — big plate is not a misnomer. Food coma guaranteed. JJ’s Featured Salad($ 5): — refreshing & chockful of colour, crunch & chew — kale, carrots, dried cranberries, toasted pumpkin seeds, brussel sprouts, lima beans & cherry tomatoes in 1 bowl! (Vegan!) Market Bowl($ 5): — brown rice + bean of the day + carrots + chickpeas + JJ’s secret sauce + local/seasonal veggies — mine featured caramelized onions, leeks, pinto beans & maple syrup. — the Indian spiced curry sauce makes it. Deep in flavour &SO addictive. — I love my meat. This hit the spot & tasted refreshing. Mind blown. 5th star goes to their stellar customer service: my order came with a free bottle of water as an apology for the«long» wait. It was 15 mins tops. But thank you kind owners. Get there early if you wanna try the Market Bowl(«Best Market Menu Item» @ 2013 Nat Bailey’s Winter Market!)
