I won free tickets to watch a matinée taping of «The Debators» and not being a big CBC radio person I was not really sure what to expect. One thing I wasn’t expecting was to be there for 3 whole hours. Now that might be a big downer in most cases but when you’re a fan of comedy(if you’re not you need to smile more!) you will be in for a treat. They filmed 3 episodes of the show which means 6 debates(featuring 12 comics) battling it out to be win the affection of the crowd. And when you have topics as diverse as is it time for the rest of Canada to stop hating onToronto and Pancakes vs Waffles you know that only good can come out of your time. Add in a very entertaining host/moderator and you’re set for a laughing out loud good time. Now for the actually theatre: it was a lot larger than I anticipated when I heard that I was going to a tap recording, I was picturing standing behind a sound mixer watching people go at it from across a giant window like they do on TV. But no this is a proper concert theatre boasting very comfy seats, friendly ushers, $ 1 coffee/soft drinks, a nice lounge area and very pretty décor all around. But no alcohol though, maybe that’s because it was a matinée? Props to CBC for having a cute little theatre up its sleeves. At $ 30 for a regular debaters ticket I might think twice before going again, but the actual studio is a treat to be at.

I’ve experienced this place from every possible angle you can think of.(Patron, performer, engineer, producer etc) If it weren’t for the crippling cost, I would do all my recording projects here. The staff(if you need them) are excellent and know the place inside and out. The sound is excellent. The space was designed as a studio with the provision for optional«meat-baffles»(audience members). It has a smooth and clear natural reverberation and with the draperies to cover nearly every hard surface, you can have as much or as little as you want. As a performer it’s a great place to work. However the backstage starts to get a little cramped if your band/ensemble/contraption has more than 12 people.
