For this event, they shut down a stretch of Cumberland Street to showcase some ice sculptures. Also, there is a DJ playing some cool beats, as well as some Bob Marley to warm up the soul. Some tents have been put for local vendors to sell soup/sandwich/cheesecake. There are also free samples of David’s Tea and Florida Orange Juice. The theme this year was ancient Egypt. I guess we’re pining for warmer temperatures. You have to wonder if in Egypt in the summer they are pining for colder temperatures and are making sand sculptures resembling snowmen. The concept is a good one. However, the execution is a little bit lacking. For one thing, there are not enough sculptures, and the ones that are there are not as awe inspiring as some other sculptures I have seen. Although Cumberland is a beautiful street, it’s not the ideal setting, since it’s narrow and crammed. I’m afraid I cannot recommend this place whole heartedly, because I don’t wish for people to be making a long trek on a wintery day just to be disappointed. I wish I could give this event a higher rating. I mean people must have put an effort in creating those ice sculptures. At the same time, most of the sculptures had advertisements on them, so I guess the artists were paid. I have a feeling that in time, this event might improve.
