I should note that my old review was based on the pre-makeover version; I’m going to try to get there soon to update!

The Wychwood Pub(formerly Legends) is a recently-renovated pub on St. Clair West near Bathurst. It’s a friendly local pub, the food is decent with good burgers and other pub food. Prices are low; you can often eat here for the same price as the fast food place next door. There’s a small but wide selection of beers on tap, and I’ve always had excellent service here. I started going to this place pre-renovation and they did a pretty good job snazzing it up — it’s pretty cozy and comfortable inside. You probably couldn’t take a large group here, but they do have tables that accommodate 8 or more.

…and those are three full stars. I still like this place because it’s so close to my apartment. This used to be known as The Cottage, then Legends for 20 years or so, and now Wychwood Arms, or The Witch as the new locals call it. Look, we all hate condos but nobody remembers to buy eggs so what are you going to do at 11AM on a Saturday. But this isn’t Legends. Don’t bother looking for the signed Stan Mikita photo, ebullient in his inappropriate Chicago Black Hawks sweater. It’s no longer there. Maybe, in a sense, it never was. And Canada no longer needs to accept refugees from Czechoslovakia, as Stan Mikita was, nor does that country even exist, nor do doctors prescribe the healthy perogie as a healthy supplement… the echoes of culture reverberate in the hallways of yesteryear. But not today. Times change, grandpa. But also this: they DON’T. But why overthink it? This is a restaurant, not a TED talk. Can’t we just enjoy the food? Well The Witch still pushes burgers, onion rings, with superfluous gravy anywhere they can cram it and they smile as they bring it to you — just like the old days. And it’s SOOO close to my house. That’s about it. People in Toronto now seem to eat out for dinner 2 out of 3 meals. They don’t even microwave things, let alone cook or god forbid kill their own meat. Ooooo. Sorry condo dwellers, did I make you squeamish? Your food comes from somewhere you know. Why don’t you put your iPods away and comb down your mohawks and cross the street to where real people eat and meet/meat. At Legends. I mean, the Wych.

I sat watching a hockey game tonight and ordered a beer. The waitress came by to take my next order. I asked for the food menu and … she never came back. Hockey game gets over. I accost the passing waiter for the bill after trying to get his attention many times. 10 minutes later. No bill. Finally I tell him I really need the bill as I have to leave. So the other waiter says«she» will give me the bill. I go to the bar and wait. She finally waves at me as I stand like a sentry at the bar waiting to leave, and tries to charge me for three beers. I say it was just one. She says 8.40 for a pint which was the cheapest beer on special. I give her a ten dollar note. She smiles at me like the cat that swallowed the canary, calls me honey, and asks if I want any change back. Wow. I say no and leave. I live opposite this bar. I’ve been here before and had friendly service but I’m pretty sure I’m never going back. I risk running into this lady again.

If you don’t look carefully, you might just walk past the bar. So, it’s a sport bar. with 2 medium sized screens. They serves some nice cocktails. The food was alright. I don’t think there’s a lot of selections on the menu. They have some serious awesome honey garlic wings that comes out fresh and hot. I ordered Fish and Chips, the cod fillets were really good but the fries just doesn’t cut it. it’s soggy and bland. I am not impressed at all when a staple bar food like fries don’t turn out. Servers were friendly but slow. We requested to add a table to accommodate more people, and was told that they can’t do that because the table was too heavy to move. So, we ended up moving the table ourselves. The server uses an ipad for orders, but apparently she can’t put the tabs on individual bill. Our bills were separated by tables instead. good points? Simple and clean décor and free wifi

This place has decent wings and curry. The beer is pricey considering this place is a total dive. I’ll go back again, but it’ll probably be out of desperation since it’s the only bar in the area.

If you want a re-live your glory days in a 1980’s sports bar, or if you simply want to cry in your beer…(maybe you missed that might-of-won-the high-school football game pass), this is the place. At Legends, the décor is distinctly out of date, and it seems like one can scrape the nicotine — or grease — off the tables, wood paneling, and brass/chrome rails. The beer is terrible, standard fare mass-brewery sugar pop(Molson’s Labbatt’s). It will leave you with a hangover that only a gun will resolve. For years I lived in St. Clair and Bathurst, and I never understood why this area is limited to such a bar.
