The Yoga Studio operates out of the Yorkville Club, but you don’t need to be a member to take classes here. You can drop in, or buy classes 5 or 10 at a time, and the prices are competitive. For the most part the yoga teachers here are really good, and some are excellent. The classes can be as gruelling or as rejuvenating as you want — you can choose according to level. It is a good idea to choose wisely, as they tend not to provide individual direction, unless you are quite obviously misaligned or about to injure yourself! The style is Hatha, however there are some Ashtanga classes, and you can also take Pilates(they offer introductory classes in all three if you are not familiar). The studios are warm and inviting(although I prefer windows if possible) and the changing facilities are pretty posh(this is the Yorkville Club, after all). I dont think parking is covered when you are not a member of the club.

There is a little thing called balance that cannot be obtained by any psychotropic med under the sun(or any mix of them for that matter). I have often struggled with the concept of serenity and the possibility of reaching an even half-calm state. For many years I tried running and even weights and I just found that my equilibrium only felt right while doing the activities. After I completed this physical strain or that intense sport, my body was tired but my mind still wanted to go and go and go. For years I was told, «you should try Yoga» and I laughed it off thinking that I needed so much more than the incense, hugging and gongs that it offered. But finally I attended a Hatha class with Scott Petrie at the Yorkville Club and I was shocked to find he wasn’t wearing tie-up pants or holding hands with his students as I walked in the room. Actually Scott’s Yoga is exactly what I was searching for — a perfect blend of acrobats and assuagement of sport and subtlety of bravery and breath.
