When I first tried salt from Selsi, I suddenly developed an even bigger obsession with salt. I’m already the kind of person who says everything isn’t salty enough, and now I crave salt like an insane person. Selsi Sea Rocks is a cute little stand near the washrooms at St. Lawrence Market, and it will make you question why you never bought smoked salts, or salts with Serrano peppers in them, or TRUFFLE salt, before. And you didn’t, because you didn’t know. And now you do, so it’s OK. I can vouch for you that gourmet salts actually change the flavour of a dish. For the better. If you’re not sure exactly how the flavour will change, or how to go about using these salts, just ask the owner, Andrea, and she will help you match a salt to every dish you could dream of. She gets her salts imported from all over the world, and she seems to know absolutely everything about every single one. My personal favourites are the truffle salt, which you can buy a cone of for about $ 8 and put it on popcorn to change your life a little bit. Second fave is the flaked salt smoked over Welsh oak(I think it was $ 16 for a huge canister of it), and of course, I love anything with hot peppers in it. This place is great if you love cooking, great if you love salt, and is really good for gifts — they’re got some really cute ideas and Andrea helps put together gift sets that every food lover will covet.
