When it comes to my hair I am extremely picky, worst than a woman I’ve been told. I’ve been highlighting and dying my hair for over twenty years now since I was a male dancer in the early nineties. I am not rich but I am willing to pay for the best, boy was I disappointed with this salon. The girls on the phone were quite friendly at first as I explained my desire to go blonde they recommended Norm«The Color King». So I was excited because I’ve never had a colorist who only does color that excitement ended when I met with Norm at the salon. Right away he dismissed my desire to dye my hair blonde saying it would not suite me, trying to be polite and perhaps a little intimidated by his reputation and being in such a high end award winning salon I took his advice on going with highlights instead of full on blonde. It looked very good more detailed than most highlights I see on people. However I was seething mad that he did not do what I told him to do after all I am paying for it. $ 160.00 for highlights double what most salon’s charge but that was not as bad as him telling me blonde dose not suite me even refusing to do what I want. He kept saying trust me, can I scream now I like to be in control of my hair and he wants me to trust him, I have to trust myself I don’t knock him out. Even the girls at the salon gave me the impression that guys should not dye there hair blonde I thought this was very unprofessional on everyone’s part. Oh Norm this and Norm that it’s like who are you to question his opinion and not take his advice. So the next day I phone to tell them, look I really want to go full on blonde, I came prepared with a photo which he dismissed that it would not look like that, I know it can’t be exactly like the photo but his attitude really sucks. I was never shown any swatches or photo’s I said golden and I should have said dirty or sandy blonde, so at this point I can tell Norm is pissed off. When he finishes I say it’s too light he says«that’s what you wanted dude» and walks away. So next day I go back to the salon and tell him to use a toner which he did and finally I got the blonde look I wanted and I tipped him well even though he was rude and unprofessional he should have listened to me the first time and save all this trouble. Color is a lot less than highlights but no mention of the difference in refund at all and I didn’t ask I was just glad to not be charged again for the color. High rent fancy salon, complementary beverages and all that jazz can’t make up for lousy customer service. Tom did my cut and he was very nice and the cut was perfect as well as the girls who did the wash I wouldn’t mind getting one of there phone numbers but I hate to ask for anything if I don’t attract them them fuck it. Never the less if I do go back I think I will get another colorist other than Norm who is highly over rated.

Norm & Daniel are a perfect team for color and the best cut and blow dry ever !!! They are both honest and genuine and love what they do. I came in to see Norm again after leaving for 6 months to California where I had my hair completely destroyed. It was fried and brassy and orangey. I’m getting married in four months and was so scared that my hair was never going to be fixed. Norm helped me get rid of some of the brassiness without damaging my hair plus he highlighted me to help me feel blonde again. He knows exactly what he is doing and if you go in you have to just tell him what you want and then trust him !!! Daniel is also amazing. As damaged as my hair was he didn’t over cut it and make me feel like I had lost all my hair. He cut enough to get rid of what he had to and gave me an amazing blow dry. I’m hoping I can even bring him to do my wedding in NYC that’s how good he is !!! Now a days everyone pretends they know how to do hair when they really have no clue. These guys have been in the hair game for like 18 years they actually know what they are doing !!! Awesome place.

After 5+yrs of getting my hair done at Taz, & having many stylists leave during that time, should have been a clue that something was wrong. The last time I had an appt. the salon had moved & no one had bothered to tell me about it. When I arrived at the now old location, I called the salon to see if they had gone out of business & some girl answered & told me that they had moved. But she had a really hard time describing to me where the new location was. Frustrated, I just wandered around & found it by accident. When I got up to the check in desk, I inquired why no one had contacted me. She looked up my phone # and turns out they had it wrong(after 5yrs the # is wrong all of a sudden???) So what happened when they called to confirm and couldn’t get a hold me of me? They just let it go. Apparently the twit behind the desk has never heard of the internet, so they never bothered to look me up. After a frustrating start, things only got worse. I was quoted my usual price over the phone, but was told a much HIGHER price when it came time to pay. No way in hell I was falling for that, so I discussed it with the owner. His excuse was that they’re in a fancy new downtown location, & they’re an award winning salon so the prices reflect that. Your inconvenient location and plaques on the wall? I’m supposed to pay for that? That’s how you treat a long time customer? You can bet your dull scissors I won’t be returning & have discovered a fantastic mid town salon that’s in a WAYMORECONVENIENT location with parking, and plaques on the wall too! If you’re looking for a new salon, do yourself and your wallet a favour, and go somewhere else. TO is a huge city with lots of options. You can do way better than this place.

I have tried many salons in this area, and a friend of mine recommended Taz because Norm was the secret behind her blonde hair. Actually, interestingly enough, everyone that had mentioned Taz to me had blonde hair and also got their hair done wtih Norm so I thought he MUST be just as good with darker hair. The color came out fine, it just didn’t last long and it wasn’t a semi-permanent. I got my haircut as well, and I didn’t like that at all. The layers didn’t work with my curly hair. On top of that, she suggested a Kerastase product to me that I later found out was a serum for people with *blonde* hair. No wonder my hair felt so weird the next couple of weeks!!! The only thing that I purchaed from here that I LOVE is the Keratin leave in balm, which was described to me as «hair crack.» It truly is good. Thanks Norm.

***UPDATE: christina’s moved to DONATOSALON&SPA at Don Mills Shops(as of may 9th ’11)…guess i’m gonna follow her :)) thx taz for a pleasant ride! i love my stylist, christina kolovos at taz hair co. she’s artsy, edgy and fun — ie. everything i want in a haircut! she makes it happen every time and offers free bang trims between cuts. i’ve been getting my hair done by her for the past couple years and she’s consistently kick ass! cos of her i’m happy to step outside my comfort zone of ‘same, tried and standard haircut’. i’ve kicked it up a few notches and with her expertise and vision, i’m having fun changing my haircuts(no pressure from her, its all me!) :) cos the bottom line is, she’s so meticulous and talented at what she does, it always looks good… and i don’t go out of my way to style my hair, i need a low maintenance hairstyle, which literally means wash and go(no blowdry/product)…the cut of each bang and layer is vital so it sets like its been styled… and that’s what Christina does for my hair! amazing! taz hair co. is full of brilliant, artsy and friendly stylists’ with edge. it’s clean, pretty and offers complementary beverages. i’d recommend this salon and christina any day!

Moving cities is never fun(except for those rare occasions when you get to move from Texas to Ontario. anyway.), and can be oh, so stressful. For women, moving can be even more traumatic because of one thing: having to find a new hairstylist. Before moving to Toronto, I’d gone to the same salon for 12 years. Twelve years! I first tried to hold out from getting my hair done until I knew I’d be going back to Texas, but those trips became fewer and far between, while my hair became more and more unruly. :-) Fashion magazine did a summary of the best hair salons in Canada; I saw Taz, and even had someone recommend them, but felt they were too expensive, so I tried another salon. I went twice and both times came out far too blonde with hair that was far too short(think razed neck — um, no thank you). I finally decided to go to Taz. Seek and ye shall find. Not to mention, how can the Ontario Stylist of the Year be a bad place to be? I have nothing but praise for the staff at Taz. Yes, it’s in Yorkville and absolutely has the potential to employ only snooty staff members. This, thankfully, is not the case at Taz. Everyone is friendly, helpful and very much into hair(as they should). I’m blonde and get highlights with Norm(who runs his own charity on the side and basically RAWKS!) and get cuts with Daniel(um, HAWT). The people who shampoo must surely moonlight as masseuses, because I’ve fallen asleep not once, but twice, in the chair while being shampooed. Yes, the prices are a little steep, but if you want to look like you just bought a box of Clairol at Shoppers, then all I can say is that you get what you pay for. Bottom line: Taz makes the cut. ;-)

I have been getting my hair cut at Taz for a few years. I always go to Kozeta, who is super sweet and really knows what to do. She knows I am conservative and don’t want anything crazy, but she still pushes me to make changes and I always like what she does. I trust her to know what works with my hair and face, and she has never been wrong. The salon itself is conveniently located in Yorkville. They have very nice people who wash your hair and get you prepped, although the hair washing chairs are uncomfortable. Sometimes it’s a bit of a wait, but that seems to be common for hair salons. The staff is nice, prices are good, and they use such nice products that I always end up buying some and spending more! Good salesmanship, I guess!
