The Toronto Vegetarian Association is open to all those in Toronto interested in adopting a meat-free lifestyle. Membership at the TVA is a min. tax deductible donation of $ 20 and for another $ 20 donation you get a Discount Card that scores you all kinds of discount at health food stores and restaurants that accept it across the city. If you eat at restaurants like Fresh, Kale, the Big Carrot’s Vegetarian Café, or shop at Panacea, Essence of Life, etc. your card will pay for itself very quickly. Here’s the full list of discount locations and amounts. IMO it’s the best part of being a vegetarian association member. In addition to having the opportunity to buy the card, membership also gets you the Lifelines monthly newsletter in your mailbox and inbox which keeps you connected with all the activities and event going on in the veg community. The TVA publishes an annual Vegetarian Directory that breaks down all the veg and veg-friendly spots in the city by neighbourhood, cuisine, allergy, discount, etc. This is probably the most useful resource for vegetarians and healthy eaters in this city. If you are interested in vegetarian cooking, the Resource Centre on Baldwin Street is open 2 days a week and they have lending library of books, dvds, and all kinds of info pamphlets, free starter kits, firsthand knowledge and advice. I purchased all my cookbooks from them at discounted prices than what I found on Amazon. Most importantly, the TVA organizes and hosts the Annual Toronto Vegetarian Food Fair @ the Harbourfront Centre which is a weekend long event with over 100 exhibitors and draws somewhere in the ballpark of 20,000 visitors making it the largest of its kind in North America. There are free cooking demos, special speakers, live music but the best part is of course the delicious food. It’s like Christmas for veggies!
