For the 2011 incarnation: This year’s Zombie Walk was paaaacked — don’t yet know the numbers, but it sure felt like we exceeded last year’s 6000+. That might have something to do with what seemed liked poor route-planning resulting in numerous bottle-necks and standstills, with sardine-like packs of undead as far as the eye could see. Of course, grinding to a halt means there’s more time for zombie-watching and photo-ops, so it’s not necessarily a bad thing. An(over?) abundance of police and security tended to slow things down as well, as 1 car frequently took priority over 100 zombies. Still, all-in-all we had a great time at the walk. Part of that might come from the fact our inner narcissists were well appeased by all the photogs impressed with our Kurt & Courtney getups. I even got to play mime-mirrors with a fellow Cobain, which was a blast, and drew quite a few cameras and curious onlookers for the performance. We also brought along a zombie-virgin, and he agreed: getting all spazzed up as the walking dead is a scream! Unfortunately, I get the feeling that Zombie Walk is becoming more and more an institution, and fear that it will soon — like everything — be poisoned by corporate meddling… For now, though, it’s a bloody good time! PROS: * Awesome for people(and undead) watching * Cos-play encouraged and admired * 5 km walk — exercise! * Camaraderie! Seriously, zombies are FRIENDLY! * Free photos of yourself all over the interwebs(assuming you’re a talented costumer!) CONS: * Getting kinda packed * Getting kinda institutionalized(seriously, flyers? c’mon!) * Always really messy. Damned if I didn’t need two showers!
