Catch of the day… fresh sockeye salmon from the docks. Now that’s freshy and good. You get a discount if you buy 5 or more whole fish. Just ask and get to know the folks working around the area!

Free 15 minute parking is just enough time to grab some fresh seafood from the dock. Being able to figure out when the boats will arrive with their catch is the tricky part.

My partner and I decided to do a Sea Choice Tour to learn more about sustainable seafood. One of the places on our map was the False Creek Fishermen’s Wharf. Now, we had stopped by there before about two weeks before and we were not impressed with all the frozen fish selections. After all, we all know that frozen fish is not fresh fish. However, this time, the fishermen were ready to talk with us about more. They explained how they fish(no nets only hooks and traps), how they preserve the fish at sea(freezing the fish at — 50 degrees within minutes of catching it) and how it is smoked(must be smoked/prepared by someone other than the fishermen who caught it). We learned that frozen is not always fresh, but it is is frozen at sea opposed to being hours/days later on land, then frozen can be fresh. They also taught us about why spotted prawn are better for consumption over the tiger prawn. Spotted prawn may taste different, but that doesn’t mean bad. Try some spotted prawn and support local fishermen. And as always… Have Fun!!!

Pretty much the same review as I gave for the Steveston Fisherman’s Wharf. A go-to place for fresh seafood(flash frozen IS fresh people) and a great place to talk to the fishers who work their arses off to bring you amazing bounty. Check out the website to see what is being sold and be amazed by the selection, freshness AND price. One of my top spots in YVR.

Get your Spot Prawns here, or anything else they have on sale straight off the boats. See in Canada a fisherman can freeze his catch on the boat and then sell it dock side to whoever he wants to and that includes YOU. I see salmon both fresh in season and frozen out of season and all the other critters we have here about including sea urchin and geoduck sometimes.
