Come for the food, stay for the retro 50’s style diner-converted-Malasian restaurant ambiance! Roth Canai, Tom Kha, and Laksa were all delicious and cheap! Best Malaysian food I’ve had, although I don’t confess to being an expert. I would definitely try this place

We ordered the green mango salad, char kway teow and the Laksa. The mango dressing was good, but the mangos were ripe and not green or sour as we thought it would be. The nuts wld have been a nice texture if it was grounded a bit more. the laksa was good, a bit skimpy on the meat, sauce was thick which I loved but my friend didn’t. u could tell the noodles weren’t fresh. I am an avid fan of char kway teow but this one came out disappointing. the noodles were overcooked so a lot less chew. if it was more saucy it could probably pass for a hor fun wet noodle dish but this was a fried dish. I haven’t come by a bad kway teow and this one tops it for sure.

One of my friends recommended this place for our weekly meet up and I took it upon myself to check out the place on Unilocal beforehand to see what others had to say. Many people had a complaint that the sizes were a bit small for the price, and that service was slower than most places. In my opinion, the food was absolutely DELICIOUS. The laksa had just the perfect amount of kick(I’m not big on spicy), and the coconut milk in the soup was extremely fragrant. I will have to agree that the amount of noodles was a little lacking, but I wouldn’t have minded to pay a little extra to get another portion of noodles. For the quality of the food, I didn’t mind the 5+ minute wait. That being said, we also went in as a group of 10, making it even more excusable for the small delay. From my observation, the place seems to be a family-run business. Our waiter(who I assume was the owner’s son) was extremely welcoming and gave an effort to give us a little chit chat while we were waiting. He even commented how our group completely quieted down after the food arrived and we started eating(Yes, it was THAT good). I felt completely satisfied with my meal and if I had a choice, I’d give them a 4.5 just on the fact that there wasn’t an option to have extra noodles(I think. I’ll check again the next time I go and maybe update this). I definitely recommend the place if you’re looking for a little grub night on Hastings with a SMALL group of people.

Really lived up to its namesake. Delicious roti. Decent skewers. Authentic tasting curries. Prices were fair. Service was alright.

I have been coming to this restaurant for quite some time, since the beginning of this incarnation of the restaurant. I generally have the roti canai, beef rendang, or laksa. I have noticed the quality of the roti canai declining over time which is disappointing as it was my favorite in Vancouver. The laksa has remained pretty much the same, but the quality of the beef rendang has definitely been reduced. Tonight I had the chicken and basil Thai fried rice… Between the lack of chicken and the horrible service I think tonight will be my last visit. Twas the last nail in the coffin. R. I. P.

Great burmese restaurant. They have a wonderful lahpet thoke(green tea salad). They accommodate vegetarians. We enjoyed the samosa thoke as well. Gr w at spot. I wish there was one in NYC.

Slow service and slow cook. Portion is small… barely any noodles. meat or veggies. Lots of bean sprouts though!(haha) Spring rolls are like frozen ones… the sauce for the spring rolls tastes like barf.

First impression when I walked in was … Do I have the right place? The previous restaurant must have been a 50’s diner. The décor was reminiscent of that era. Totally didn’t fit the Malaysian style food being served. It felt weird. Not cozy at all. Staff were very friendly though. The food itself was very tasty. Portions were on the small side considering what they charged per entrée. I would have to say the best Laksa soup base I’ve had so far. I wished that they offered more than just vermicelli or yellow noodles as choices though. On the plus side, there was decent free wifi

This use to be an old diner with red vinyl seats located up the block from Vancity. I went there with my family and it was definitely a 3⁄5. Pros: — Prices seem really reasonable: $ 8-$ 12 — This is a mom & pop family run restaurant & perhaps daughter serving. Service was great. The place was packed quickly at 6pm. — Roti popular and although we didn’t order it want to try for next time — Cold squid with chilli peppers was nice. — Food generally okay — I am not familiar with this type of food but it was in the salty side for me: especially with fried rice, lamb curry, saucy brown yellow noodles with chicken or beef — The papaya salad was okay it was strange with tofu and other things in it. Compared to the Vietnamese style papaya salad with jerky this definitely was not as good honestly — The skewers was good seem pre heated — Yes cash only! Royal bank @ London drugs and Vancity down the block & plenty of other banks. — yellow noodles preferable but the brown soya sauce seemed to give it too much of a saucy salty taste. It’s restaurant food for the masses not amazing, really salty, but not bad. Overall tried it once and feel like I would not come back anytime soon.

This restaurant definitely looks like a place that serves burgers and fries than Malaysian food when I first stepped into the restaurant. We were seated promptly and given menus. I ordered a laksa and roti canai. My date ordered beef rendang. The food arrived shortly after we placed our order. The portions are definitely on the smaller side. However, the flavours for the laksa and beef rendang were great! The laksa hit the right level of spiciness and coconut flavour. I think there could have been more noodles for that price. I found the roti to be on the denser side than others I have tried. The dipping sauce was not as aromatic as I would have liked. Also, the side of veggies that accompanied the beef rendang was a sad portion size. It did taste refreshing for the few bites there was. Overall, tasty food experience! Is it the best I have tried? No, but was a solid meal.

It was a bit of a miss for me. First of all CASHONLY! Luckily I had some cash, but not enough to actually get what I wanted. I was going to leave but I was seated already. I was able to get the Laksa $ 9.50 plus tax.($ 10). I came with only $ 13.75(: in my wallet. I usually get the roti canai and Laksa when I’m in a Malaysian Restaurant but didn’t have enough cash. So its a pretty cool looking place hidden in the bustling East Village. It looked like it could have been a diner back in the day and Laksa King took over or this is how this Malay Restaurant is suppose to look, either way its pretty cool. Small place but fast friendly service. My laksa came in no time I got it with yellow noddles you have a choice of vermicelli if you’d like. The laksa came with chicken, boiled egg, fish balls, fried tofu, shrimp, bean sprouts, and lime not much veggies. The broth was spicy and I love spicy but that was it no other flavor to it, I was missing the coconut taste from the coconut milk, different spices, or even salt, it was a little bland, this was disappointing. I ate the meat and some of the noddles and barely had any broth. Overall Ive had better.

We came here because of the reviews we read and we were certainly not disappointed. Lovely owners, spectacular flavours of Burma. Tender meat, flavourful sauces, the Laksa is to die for! We will be back, next time we drive by we will be stopping here.

After much anticipation, I finally got a chance to try the Laksa and the Roti at Laksa King. Three words. WHATTHEFREAK? The best I have ever had in Vancouver. The thing is, I went in there kind of expecting to be disappointed because I had such high anticipation. But they surprised me by exceeding my expectations! They make the roti in-house from scratch and it shows. Extremely soft with great consistency on the inside, light, fluffy and crispy on the outside. Incredible. And the curry dip… Incredible. Just absolutely amazing. Now the laksa… It had the perfect balance of coconut and spicy flavours. Such depth in the soup… There was also a big chunk of tender meat that went perfectly with all the other ingredients. Some places, the laksa is either too creamy or the opposite but here, they created a perfect balance. The more I tasted the soup, the more I tasted the complex yet harmonious flavours. If you are looking for an authentic bowl of Laksa, this is the place. There’s only one problem tho, now I will want this every day… So sad that I don’t live close by. Fyi, it’s cash only folks so pay your visit to the ATM before coming here. Oh, I found this afterwards, their menu is on their website:

Went because of Unilocal recommendations. Came away very disappointed. There are a lot of places in Vancouver where the Malaysian, Burmese good is way better. Pretty confused about the 4 stars from Unilocal.Maybe they have a change in chef recently? Tasted ok, nothing special. Somehow appears to appeal to western crowd rather than being authentic. Ordered soup noodles, for $ 8.50 there’s maybe a mouthful of noodles in it. Pretty sad looking bowl of noodles and there’s barely anything in it. Roti was alright but there are way better ones around. Tried it, didn’t like it, not going back

Laksa was really good and service was excellent. Roti was a pass and not Malaysian style. It was a thick chewy pancake. The décor is a little confusing as they have kept the 60s diner tables, order booth and wall art. Will come back again and try a few more dishes.

Really 2.5 stars. I’ve been here a few times, the employees are nice and friendly. It’s a small place, maybe 8 – 10 tables and you pay at the counter. The food is a bit of a hit and miss for me. I’ve had the roti canai, it was pretty good, fluffy and chewy. The laksa was also pretty good, decent portion and nice flavours, the lamb curry? not so much, for $ 12.50 a very small portion with a «side» of pickled veg(if you look at my pic, it’s not even worth putting it on the plate… embarassing really) the flavour of the curry was pretty average at best, my friend also had the butter chicken, again small portion but my friend liked it. Will I be back? maybe for the laksa…

I’ve always been meaning to try this place so my friend and I decided to have lunch here. Very easy to find parking, there are tons of 1-hour street parking in front. We ordered their roti canai and beef skewers, I had their Laska with mixed noodles(vermicelli and yellow noodles), and my friend ordered a rice dish. The roti canai was soft, crispy, and delicious. It was homemade. I enjoyed the laska because it wasn’t too spicy and I can’t really handle extremely spicy food. The skewers were a bit tough but I really liked the side of coconut rice(I think that’s what it is) and peanut sauce. The owner is very nice! This place is very accommodating as well. I will definitely be back again :)

One of the coolest spots in Vancouver. Hidden away in the middle of East Van. Unpretentious retro 50s diner look, with neon that works, very cool. Really good roti, delicious, the best I’ve ever had. Crispy and hot a treat. The spiced dipping sauce is so very complex flavored. Laksa is divinely seasoned, perfection . Singapore noodle is good. Curry chicken is a generous portion. Every dish makes you feel like your in someplace exotic. A great place to come back again and again

I can barely keep my eyes open after eating here. Huh, what does that mean? Food coma galore! I have to say Laksa King has the best laksa in Vancouver. Straight up. This is pretty much a hole in the wall, complete with cafeteria style napkin dispensers on each table and a cheesy mural on the wall. Even this place is out of the way for me, there’s no high chair or change tables for my baby and it’s cash only… I will still come back. As previously mentioned by the other Unilocalers, get the Laksa Yellow Noodle Soup and the Roti.
