As years have gone by the quality of the food during dine out Vancouver has gone south; this year I found an excuse to meet up with a friend for dinner before checking out a Push Festival show on Granville Island. We picked Nosh as it was new on the dining scene in Kitsilano and happily blown away by the quality and service. Upon arrival the owner greeted us and as no tables were available she offered a free glass of wine while we wait for a table to be cleaned. This kind of service is not very common in Vancouver so right off the bat we were up to a happy mood. She also started telling us about what the concept of this joint is all about. Basically the concept comes from a French«fast food» were chefs prepare food while you wait and by having a small menu the process is expedited. The dine out option at $ 18 for three courses seemed like a steal of a deal so I started off with the Apple Parsnip soup that had a sweet and sour taste. My main course was Pork shoulder with stuffed apricot and sage and was cooked to perfection. The mind blowing part of the evening was the Orange Chocolate Rice Pudding presented in an old school jam jar. Needless to say the next time I’m in Kits I’ll be paying Nosh another visit!

I stumbled upon this place literally by accident after grabbing some hot chocolate from the Thomas Haas a few doors down. I was supposed to go somewhere else for lunch, however, decided to spoil my dinner here without telling anyone. I walked in with the intention of just collecting a business card so that I could come back later in the week during the rest of the hot chocolate festival, however, upon having a culinary conversation with the owner/head chef I was enticed to stay. I have a little thing for desserts in jar, in fact I am obsessed with things in jars and pack my own lunch In various jars. Their desserts were nicely displayed in reusable jars. They have chicken in vacuum packed bags which means better take out. There was a tank full of boiled bags of chicken that looked like a tank of crabs. I must have been tripping out on the chocolate from before. Part of the reason I stayed is ’cause as a foodie I appreciate someone who is passionate about the culinary arts, passionate about their restaurant and is passionate about customer relations. It was dead quiet when I was in there and it was nice that the chef/owner indulged me in some culinary talk with me. For the area the prices are very reasonable. I had the squash soup which was amazing. It was nicely sweetened, however, not a cavity assault but just enough to bring out the squash notes. I was served with awesome gluten free bread which was a plus. The establishment is clean, nicely set with clean colors.

A successful impromptu Dine Out Vancouver dinner. Nosh is serving a $ 18DOV menu. Some hits, some misses. Food was very well-presented, which surprised me given the casual ambience(like a classy cafeteria). Overall a good experience with food and service. More of a 3.5 stars in my books, but am rounding up because I want to see this new business(only a couple of weeks old!) succeed. Ordering is cafeteria style. You order and pay first at the cashier. Only a handful of tables available. Bar stool seating along the windows. Servers will bring the food to your table. Appetizers: really enjoyed the Parsnip & Apple Soup. The salad option, which sounded super luscious and fancy on paper, was only as exciting as a garden green. Entrée: my Rotisserie Pork Shoulder was delicious. The roasted root vegetable side was just as good. This one is a winner! FYI, this entrée is on their regular menu for $ 14. Dessert: both the Cinnamon Orange Rice Pudding and Apple Hand Pie were dry. Need more… moisture! Lastly, here are my random thoughts that may be helpful to you when deciding whether to pay a visit. When it comes to Canadian/American food, I tend to be either el cheapo(think diners and burger joints) or I’m willing to pay a bit more money for a swanky sit-down meal. Nosh fits in the middle with me. The main dishes are regularly priced at $ 14 for fairly small portions(I was informed that the DOV entrée is the same size). You definitely need an appy to be full. But then again, with Kits rent, I can understand. I would come back to try their soups and sandwiches though. Their rotisserie is a hit with me!
