Ocean Art Works is the longhouse style open-air art space on Granville Island. Walk by any day and some artistic endeavor is in-the-works. In the past I’ve seen large First Nations sculptures here, and most recently I watch two men as they worked on carving some massive logs into totems. Actually, they were in the rolling-the-log over stage when I was there, but some carving work was partially completed. Year-round you’ll find various arts events ranging from pottery to Chinese New Year celebrations. The building faces Johnson St. and the gradual-slope roof is supported by intricately carved cedar logs. Because the walls are open, with a metal mesh keeping people out, you can see right in to the activity inside. If you’re on Granville Island, I heartily recommend spending some time watching the creation of art in this space.
