It’s a goner-the hateful scowling bitch who owned the place finally managed to drive everyone away. Some of the food was good but who wants to eat in a place where the owner looks @ you like she’s about to spit in your food?

As others have stated you get what you pay for. The sandwiches are beautifully made but for about $ 10 each not something you want to be buying every day. I’ve tried three different soups and loved them all.

This place is great, you pay a little more for great quality. The owner can be a bit blunt but she is a good lady once you get chatting with her. It is always way to hard to choose what to get here because everything is so good. Good local biz to support!

Mixed experience here. Some good products undermined by awful customer service. German girl serving us had no interest in answering our questions and refused to put some butter on my daughters croissant. The quiche was excellent but the bread on my sandwich was stale and at least 24 hours old.

We had been meaning to go here for a year and a half-it always looks so cute and inviting. We finally made it here for breakfast, and I’m so glad we did. Had the eggs over hard breakfast– just purely enjoyable. Eggs were tasty, toast was a perfect texture, the jam was delicious. Everything in the right proportion too, to leave you satisfied but not in a coma. Will definitely come here again!

This place apparently had a mention on German tv about german-esque establishments in Vancouver. So i was keen to go and reminisce. Boy, was i disappointed. There were some authentic products but nothing that really catches the eye or can’t be ordered online. Food was less than mediocre. The sandwiches looked good, the ‘onion soup with cheese’ was the kraft tex mex grated variety and the cheesecake wasn’t cheesecake at all. There was a soup and sandwich special but you were only allowed to choose the sandwiches that were already made. thereby negating the offer that was stuck on the ‘fridge’ thing. The server we had was friendly enough, the owner seemed annoyed that there were paying customers. It was a weekend and wasn’t busy. Hopefully, more so for the business, she was having a one off bad day.

I went here the other day after my appointment with my chiropractor, whose office was in the area. I’ve passed by this place several times, but this was my first visit. I ordered the Turkey Schnitzel — my first Schnitzel EVER! I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but I liked that the meat was hot and moist. It was not a bad sandwich, but the presentation was a little too simple and uninspired. Some other places in the area easily make comparable sandwiches with better presentation. Their pastries looked amazing, and I made a mental note to try them soon. The retail section had some interesting products, although I didn’t recognize any of them. Reading some reviews here, I’m a little surprised to hear about the apparently horrible service. I thought that the staff was efficient and polite. For a small establishment like this, that’s all you can ask for.

I am German, just moved here a couple months ago, so I was excited to see this place… but for real, their service is horrible, very unfriendly staff… in German we call it «Service-Wüste»… Service Dessert… maybe she just had a bad day, let’s hope so

The grocery portion of the store is very«Dean & Deluca», you know, the really high– end cans and jars of gourmet stuff that you typically get in gift baskets but you don’t really know what to do with. The sausage and meat section looks really good, but the only way that I would consider paying close to $ 6 for 4 slices of bacon is if I know the pig had been hand fed and given daily massages and the smoking came from the burning of a Louis the 14th armoire. The part that warrants a 4 star rating is the prepared food section. Their smoked turkey sandwich was the best sandwich I have had this year. The sweet acid from a thin slice of orange complemented the smoke from the shaved turkey and the flecks of jalapeño from the chili cheese bread. Even with toasting that bread was outstanding — a thin crispy crust surrounding a tender, melt in your mouth middle. We tried to pick up a loaf after we were done but it was already sold out at a little after noon. I wouldn’t hesitate to return for some of their other well– priced prepared fare.

guess not surprisingly no one’s ever written here — it’s like a gem hidden inside the Kits/Cornwall area. Has the best potato salad i’ve ever experienced – seriously, i know it’s only potato salad. Just the right texture, as it’s cut into flakes/layers, and the smooth, buttery, garlic… wow… It’s also a retail/deli, so you’ll see some European(probably mostly German) stuff there too. Also have sandwiches, croissants, etc. in their display case, and you know it’s fresh w/its open kitchen in the back… It’s a neat experience b/c you can browse up the aisles and plenty of seating too…

The very fact that there are those two adorable little dots above the ‘o’ in Plöger is enough to give it them four stars. BUT fortunately for everyone involved(including you), diacritics aren’t all they’ve got going on. Homemade granola, preserves, soups, pastries and sandwiches, PLUS countless other grocery-ish items like European cheese, chocolates and weird packaged candies scattered throughout this minimally-stocked German deli /grocer makes for a pretty sweet lunch stop when wandering the mean streets of West 1st and Cypress. Ja, meine freunde, Plöger may not be for the budget-conscious, but it’s a small slice of German charm cake right there in Kitsilano.

The food is prepared well and tasty but it can be slow and expensive. If I go back it will be for takeout. I feel like I am bothering the owner. She seems stressed every visit.

I had a Groupon for $ 20 which got me to the store. Some items are over-priced so I just won’t buy them here any more. What I will be back for is the small selection of pâté that they carry. The apricot one is my fave! From what I can tell it’s made in North Vancouver. At about $ 5 a slab it’s tasty. Their feta stuffed olives aren’t too bad at $ 8.95 for a decent portion. Their Swiss emmental isn’t badly priced either. For about $ 25 you could pick up enough to have a picnic with a friend or two.

* Microwaves should be illegal * I was craving a schnitzel sandwich something along the lines of what you get at Rubenbauer Gastronomie( ) for a light lunch. But things didn’t go well. Instead of a nice freshly made schnitzel, they reheated the schnitzel in a microwave. Microwaves should be made illegal in any restaurant. The schnitzel itself was overly salted and was way too thick. Just not satisfying on any level. It was served on pretzel bread, which was slightly past its prime. They apparently do not bake their own pretzel bread here, it comes from a bakery in North Vancouver. Overall this didn’t scratch the schnitzel sandwich itch. Wait, that sounds like some exotic German disease. Anyhoo…

Hell ya! If pretzels(like the ones at Swiss Bakery) hold a special key to your heart — you have to try their pretzel sandwich! Ham, lettuce, tomato, cole slaw(yup, I said slaw) and of course, a pretzel with the perfect amount of salt! I gobbled it up AND licked the plate! Good thing I asked for it to go, it was a messy eat, better attempted in the comforts and privacy of one’s own car/home! The selection of foodstuffs might not be mighty, but they’re good quality and completely worth checking out — but make sure you save a sammie for me!

This new specialty store on 1st took over the old fruit & veg store and gave it a much needed makeover inside. They are still super new, but will specialize in German deli offerings. The space looks lovely and once they get all their offerings, it will be a wonderful(and hopefully long term) addition to the hood!
