I walk by this place often when I go to the post office and thought I’d give it a try for lunch today. I went in and ordered their daily soup for take-out, which today was the yellow split pea soup. I heard the girl ahead of me asking what the soup of the day was and they told her it was sold out. I thought that was weird since I was behind her and I had ordered it and they told me it was come up. So when it came for my turn to pay at the register, they were talking to each other about how there is very little left in the soup and that there’s not enough to fill the bowl, so they turn and tell me it’s actually sold out. If it’s sold out, fine, but they weren’t very apologetic about it. They just told me in a kind of matter of fact way, ‘the soup is sold out’. So I’m standing there thinking, ‘well all I really wanted was the soup’ as I was trying for a healthy lunch so I told them fine, I’ll get their mixed green salad. I pay for it and behind the counter the girl was trying to find it and told another guy that she couldn’t find any. He told her he’ll go make it so they tell me it’ll be a few minutes — that’s fine with me as well. Finally once it’s made and ready she puts the salad into a bag and smiles at me kind of just waiting, so finally she asks if I had already been rung through. I replied yes because that’s how everyone’s order was — they order, were rung through and THEN brought their food after since it had to be prepared. I don’t know why I would be singled out. Anyway, that was just a little part that bothered me but no big deal. The worst part happened when I got home 5 minutes later and went to eat the salad — I looked at the clear container and was about to open it up and pour dressing in when I see a little bug flying around inside the carton! It must have flown in and got sealed inside but it was flying and landing on all the parts of the salad — the greens, cheese and walnuts. Needless to say, that honestly made my stomach turn and I lost my appetite. So much for a good, cheap, healthy lunch. Which by the way, for $ 4, I’ve had much bigger and heartier salads. It was a small container with some greens and a few tiny cubes of cheese and walnuts. Definitely not worth $ 4. All in all, I’m sure the place serves decent food, but my experience today was not the best by far, and it’ll probably be a long time before I’m back since the fly incident left a bad taste in my mouth. Oh well…

Me and my coworkers go too for lunch! Also a popular choice for the lawyers. The ingredients are always fresh and always delicious! You are greeted with friendly service and a smile. It’s great because you can go with a big group of people and everyone can get exactly what they want. I hear the special of the day is great and interesting. I don’t eat meat so I wouldn’t know. There soup is delicious and made fresh but if you don’t come early on a cold wet day it’s sold out :( In the summer their ice cream sandwiches made with homemade cookies are divine! They have good breakfast sandwiches too. It’s great to find a fresh, affordable and friendly lunch spot downtown. It’s hidden in the neighborhood that I am comfortable in because I work their but may scare off some other folks. Always good, fresh and healthy food!

Secret awesomeness tucked in by the post office. Staff is super friendly, and the food is fresh and tasty. The ambiance is super hip — Their branding could reflect this better, though. Their breakfast sandwiches are amazing.

The service is impeccable here at scent of a sandwich. I’m so glad they serve breakfast sandwiches all day errday. I just found out they have late night grilled cheese from 10pm-3am. Too bad I’m not around the area more often cause it sounds so mmyumzzz.

This place may not look like much but their sandwiches are great. I’m a bit of a penny pincher when it comes to lunch so I like meals that are $ 10 or less, taste good and leave me feeling better than I did before I ate them. That last bit may sound strange but I find a good many take-out joints serve food that tastes good going down, but leaves you feeling like a pile an hour later. Scent of a Sandwich meets all my criteria. Their sandwiches have a homemade vibe to them which I find quite appealing. The ingredients taste fresh and they’re distributed in a thoughtful, even manner. This to me is critical when creating a delicious sandwich. Many people believe a great sandwich is the product of superior ingredients alone — these people are amateurs! A great sandwich is realized when the creator has not only selected the right ingredients but also taken care to prepare those ingredients and arrange them in a calculated, proportioned way. Too much mayonnaise will overwhelm the sandwich! Tomato’s cut too thick? Sandwich ruined! Scent of a Sandwich has never disappointed me in this capacity. They are true to the sandwich game.

Sometimes you just want simplicity — good old back to the basic, unfancified staples: Kraft dinner as opposed to lobster Mac ‘n cheese, an All in the Family rerun instead of Modern Family, regular Trojans rather than extra-large, super-lubed, guaranteed multiple orgasms — you get the drift. Scent of a Sandwich makes a good sandwich. They don’t have posh toppings like lavender pesto or walnut prosciutto — you won’t miss them. All their ingredients are fresh and well put together. Their meats, I usually get the chicken which is always a moist breast(sorry, hate the word moist but felt it was necessary here), are top quality. They offer a couple types of bread — the multi-grain sourdough is tasty — but the real stars are all the veggies, especially their roasted red peppers. They also have the best mustard — it’s definitely not French’s — which has the perfect amount of zing. Most places that offer made to order sandwiches charge around the ten dollar mark but here, you only pay 6.95 plus tax. Follow your nose to Scent of a Sandwich where it makes sense to spend your hard-earned cents.(Groans duly acknowledged).

I walked by this place on the way back from my hair dressers to kill time before my next event. This place doesn’t look as though it has much at first, however, what they do have is quality breads, meet and fresh veggies which speaks volumes. The sandwhiches are decently priced and the«sandwhich artist» is very efficient. They just need to have a better cookie selection and then we’re all set. It is in a sketchy part of Hastings, however, I was surprised at the treasure and cleanliness this place had.

I visit this place on a weekly basis because the sandwiches are that good. The staff are friendly and very fast. The selection is good and what you see is what you get. My sandwich of choice is Ham and Havarti with Red Onions and Chipotle Mayo on Chiabatta bread. Very delicious.

When you can order a top-quality, Italian-style sandwich without the DT prices, it’s a winner! Sure, it’s in Chinatown but you get the drift. choice of ciabatta, herbal one too, multigrain & sourdough. they use fresh local ingredients, & generous portions w/the condiments & extra options too. Mozzarella, cheddar or swiss – what a selection! Clean place too, about 10 tables & also offer catering too. parking as usual isn’t the greatest but then again, if you’re willing to walk a bit, there’s an Impark behind it, closer to the Pender side, east of Main.

As the name suggests, they make sandwiches. Damn good ones, too. Roast chicken, Brie, spinach and herb mayo for $ 6? Pretty fantastic.

The other day I had a client in town and we needed to have our business meeting over lunch, in our office. I asked our receptionist where I should go and she let me know we’d been ordering quite a bit from Scent of a Sandwich. I went to their website knowing that my client couldn’t have onions or bell peppers. No problem! I ordered these three sandwiches Black Forest Ham and Edam(Dijon-Mustard Aioli, Butter Lettuce on freshly baked baguette), Oven Roasted Chicken Breast and Pesto(Fresh Spinach, Pesto Aioli and creamy Brie cheese on a fresh baked ciabatta) and Oven Roasted Turkey Breast and Havarti(Cranberry Aioli, Butter Lettuce and vine ripe Tomatoes on a freshly baked baguette), each $ 8.25 along with this salad — Spinach with feta, grape tomatoes, pumpkin seeds and balsamic vinaigrette. The salad is priced at $ 18 and says it serves 10 people. Not sure about the portions there as three of us(they were two rather big guys that I was meeting with) only left enough salad for maybe a couple of lucky people in the office. The sandwiches were loaded with all the fillings and were very tasty. The breads were all very fresh too. I asked for it to be delivered at noon and it was. The three sandwiches came on a nice shiny platter with a linen cloth, covered with wrap. The salad was in a nice wooden bowl, dressed and ready to serve. They brought paper plates, tongs for the salad, napkins and stainless steel forks. They want to reduce as much waste as possible and work towards sustainability. After we were done I ran the reusable serving dishes through the wash and left them on the counter and today they were gone so had been picked up. I’m sure they don’t expect you to do the dishes though. The menu is simple and their website says that they’re going to be opening some locations soon. You can follow them on facebook too. I’ll definitely use this service again when I need to have a nice, simple but delicious lunch brought to our office.
