This restaurant is delicious, and the staff is very friendly. I have been there several times now and my meal has always been perfectly cooked. We always get fresh oysters for an appetizer, and I have had steak, fish, and even macaroni and cheese for dinner. All dishes that I have ordered and that my company have ordered have been cooked perfectly, and very delicious! I would recommend this place to anyone looking for high quality restaurant. The prices are high but the food is worth it.

Chef Daryle Ryo Nagata’s Seventeen89 is a fresh stop for your culinary taste! Nothing but the best comes from his kitchen. Former Chef of the Pan Pacific Hotel here in Vancouver during the Olympics & the Fairmont in DC, Chef Nagata’s Northwest fusion cuisine is a revelation! You MUST stop by Seventeen89. Come for the food, stay for the jazz & blues. Make it your next night out, and you’ll be back again soon.

We ended up at 1789 because it was recommended by someone we met in the elevator of our hotel! It was a great recommendation! The food is excellent, — the mushroom studel and crab cakes are really special. The entertainment was excellent, remarkable given the limited number of seats. Get a reservation or you won’t get one of those seats!

The food at Seventeen89 is quite good, if not a little overpriced. However, the awkward, frustrating personalities of the staff and manager sour the experience. I’m not sure if I’ll be back.

I went to Seventeen89 while on vacation in Vancouver(West End) with my family. There were six of us there for dinner. We had a lovely time! The food was great and the service was awesome. Our server, Adrienne, was funny and friendly. She made good recommendations for food and drinks and even joked with my mother-in-law that she was going to make a drink named after her. It was a Sunday evening, so the place wasn’t too busy, which may have influenced the laid-back atmosphere and good service. I would definitely return. The food was great and we all had a very nice time.

This place is amazing!!! The service is top notch. Adrienne is the best! She is super personable and a true pro at what she does. The desserts are delicious. They also have a great patio area where the jazz music from inside floats out. It has a great ambiance. This place is going to become a regular stop for dessert and coffee for sure. I would recommend the chocolate mousse and the chai tea crème brûlée with an espresso.

I’ve never been or heard of this place before, which is strange considering how much I love seafood and how long it’s been around. Now that I’ve been, I’m pretty sure I know why. Although the food was quite good, everything else was neglected. We ordered three mains(steak, sablefish, pasta) oysters, a mushroom filo appy and a salad(a cobb salad, made with romaine, not very good). Although the server was very sweet, each of these took a lifetime to come out. The décor is extremely dated,(think stuffy, dark, musty and velvet) which always makes me feel uneasy about eating shellfish. They had live jazz which was nice, but keep in mind there is a cover fee associated with this. It was my birthday, and they offered a really nice assortment of little desserts on the house, again, not great tasting but a very kind gesture nonetheless.

I’ve been walking by and peeking into Seventeen89 ever since I moved to the West End a few months ago. Having read the mixed reviews it deterred me from hopping to it. Walking in at 8pm on a Friday night, the restaurant was half filled with older folks enjoying a quiet dinner. The jazz band plays soulfully among the plush red booths, heavy oversize table and chairs and a beautiful bar. I half expected a flapper or cigarette girl to wander by. We were greeted promptly by the hostess who was a little shaky with her greeting and the explanation of a $ 10 cover for the live band AND a minimum spend of $ 20.00 per person. I’ve encountered one or the other, but never both! I was quite put off by it, but we were there, so may as well try to enjoy it. Their cocktail list is very period correct, and so I opted for the sidecar martini instead of my usual beer. The waitress was very confused by my order but went away to place it anyways, only to come back and ask me what I ordered. Somehow pointing it to her on the menu clarified it all… was I slurring when I said«Sidecar»? Am I at a phở restaurant and should I be ordering by numbers? —-Clearly, staff needs more training. My sidecar martini arrived and at $ 10.00 for a 2 oz martini, I’d say it was definitely worth it and didn’t disappoint! The BF ordered the half rack and lamb shank and I ordered the sablefish. Best sablefish ever, and it wasn’t a mini human portion on a giant human plate. Everything was executed perfectly. The dessert. OMG, the DESSERT. No big American portion cheesecakes, these are mini desserts, I had the chai tea crème brule and it was silky, smooth and the chai tea flavour done perfectly. Why haven’t I had this before?! The $ 10.00 for the band? Gladly pay it again as long as they keep bringing in fantastic talent like they did on Friday. One annoying detail, the chairs albeit super comfortable was way too big and so were the tables. It was very difficult to have a private, quiet conversation with the music playing and being 4 feet across from each other. I think it would work better if the big tables were switched out for smaller circular tables and those comfy chairs can stay. All in all, a shaky start to the evening but Seventeen89 definitely redeemed itself. I will definitely, absolutely be visiting them again.

As a public service announcement, I have to say that if you live nearby and aren’t getting the $ 10 burger and beer Thursday night special you are, in a way, losing money. It’s a great deal on a very tasty burger and fries and a big glass of suds. We went on a Thursday night and it was mostly empty. I can imagine if this place was on the main drag of Denman it’d be full every night, but it’s just far enough off to miss out. I had the sablefish with risotto, and my wife had the aforementioned burger special. We also got a few drinks. The food was delicious, I found no flaws at all there. I love the décor, it’s very plush, cozy, and classic; I think it’d be a phenomenal venue for a jazz show. We had to settle for the recorded tunes, but if I’m ever back in the area I’d make it a point to drop in on a night they’ve got a band playing. Without the burger special, I could see where the prices could run high with a drink or two. Also, the cocktail I got was not well prepared; that’s about the only real issue we had for our meal.

Solid four stars, edging towards 4.5. We ordered the shrimp cocktail and crabcake for appetizers. Shrimp cocktails was solid 4 stars. Crabcake was slightly too salty for our taste, but overall quite good. Would have given it a 5 if less salty. Mains were the honey garlic scallop and shrimp pasta, and the halibut and dungeness crab. Scallop and shrimp pasta was AMAZING. Shrimp and scallops were cooked to perfection. Great flavour in dish, without being overly salty. Easily 5 star dish. Halibut and crab dish was cooked in some type of pastry crust. Pretty good; 4 stars. Desert was mini size, only 3.5 dollars. Nothing to write home about. Overall quite happy with the food, would definitely return to try more.

Great new place in downtown Vancouver. A restaurant owned by an elite chef and fisherman is a good start. The food was fantastic — extremely fresh seafood in generous portions. All of our entrees were delicious. The dining room is cozy, with comfortable chairs. The service was friendly and the chef made the rounds chatting with customers about their experience. The cute mini desserts were a great endnote to a fabulous dining experience!

Disappointing. After reading reviews, I was looking forward to trying this place. We had dinner for a wedding, it ended up being $ 80 as they included an automatic gratuity for each guest, a little much but we thought it would be worth it. My boyfriend specifically asked for his steak well done, no pink. Of course on arrival it was rare, and sent back. Instead of preparing a new one as would be expected, the cut up pieces were recooked. At this point, everyone is almost done there meals and he didn’t want to wait for them to make a fresh one. I might expect this from a cheaper establishment, but not for an $ 80 meal. Overall the rest of the food was ok, but hardly worth the cost. While I understand the automatic gratuity of 20% for large groups, I really dislike it since there is no choice if you are unhappy with things. Unfortunately, will not be going back again.

As a commercial fisherman that catches many of the same local species served here, I can frankly tell you that I was thoroughly impressed with the quality and variety of seafood on the menu. We had fresh oysters, fried fanny bay oysters, side stripe shrimp, pan seared duck and the halibut and crab fillo. All were absolutely excellent and extremely fresh, with the halibut and crab fillo being one of the most delicious entres I can ever remember eating. They also offered types of fish like Rough eye and Pacific Ocean perch, which are caught localy but I have never seen in local restaurants. The prices were very reasonable for the products offered though the steaks(we never tried) at $ 45 seemed to be much more expensive then the fish. Trevor was our server and he was good at his job. Can’t wait to go back and try more of the menu.

Seventeen 89 was opened in mid-August on Comox Street and it got some reviews on Unilocal. So, I picked it for Xmas dinner with my good friend and found it’s not outstanding. When we walked in around 6.40pm, it only had few tables customer in the dining room. I found the dining room quite dark and not classy or modern. It has a small TV at lounge area and tiny oyster shelves beside it. We ordered the bread, it was fresh from oven(as good as Gotham’s one). Seafood chowder — It’s quite creamy and a lot of seafood but tasted bland. Crab cakes — It presented beautifully, nothing special. Oysters– A dozen of Kusshi again! It’s fresh and matched with lovely home-made sauce. It’s delicious. Rib eye steak &NY Striploin — It’s great and perfectly cooked but not meet with Steak house standard. Duck Duo — Huge portion, duck leg confit: the skin was crisped and meat falling off the bone. Duck breast was quite raw but taste good. Mini desserts were absolutely doable after dinner. Chocolate mousse was smooth and Ginger bread pudding was warm and crunchy. Both were just right. Overall was ok, but I would expect for more that I paid $ 17 for crab cake and $ 45 for steak.

They should not be charging prices you’d expect at Hawksworth or Hy’s … Food was tasty but poorly plated and the temperature was barely warm. The quality isn’t there to be having $ 40 + entrees. They were very understaffed on a Saturday night. If you sit in a private room, other than a dimmer switch there is no ambiance.- no music, barely a flame from the candle and you will be forgotten about. Good try but there are many better options in the city.

Service was awesome and the meats lived up to the Alberta quality. If you like seafood the stable fish was melt in your mouth and fresh. If you like tart desserts the lemon tart was good too! Bite size so this way there is no excuse for you to not be able to try it even if you are a tad full!

Seriously drooling just thinking about the delicious dinner that I had last night! The Queen Charlotte sablefish was so fresh and just melted in my mouth! The taste combination with sake, soya and maple syrup was heavenly. If I’d had more room I would have dipped the delightfully warm crusty bread in it and soaked it all up. We started with the albacore tuna and crab cake tapas which were also beautifully presented and tasted great along with a glass of Cava. The bottle of Dogpoint Sauvignon Blanc went really well with our mains. We couldn’t resist each trying one of their dessert miniatures — great concept there! I want to go back with a group of friends and reserve one of the adorable round private banquettes in the back. It was so good to be back in that room again. I’m happy they kept much of the Delilah’s décor!

This is definitely my new food fave in the neighbourhood! My husband and I travel and eat out, a lot, so have certainly experienced the good, the bad and the terrible of food places. I’m also a culinary school grad so am rather particular about what I eat. This place is great! We wandered by and decided to try it during the soft opening. First we had the greens and field berries salad. The large portion was almost too much for the two of us but we persevered because it was so fresh and delicious. I had the freshest halibut I’ve ever eaten! The chef came to the table and gave us the name of the fishing boat, said it had been caught the day before and so was on my plate within 24 hours. It was also the largest portion of fish I’ve ever received in a restaurant. My husband is a spaghetti and meatballs expert — he compares everything to his favourite dish eaten in Italy. This restaurant met his high standards and he ate every morsel. I do have to agree with the previous reviewer’s comments about being surprised about the extra charge for the bread, but perhaps that will change. We have been back twice and have had excellent food each time. We are wine and scotch drinkers and were very satisfied with the choice and prices. During our initial visit we had an abundance of servers, three I believe, because they were being trained. Our children have been servers(as have I, in a previous life) so we tend to go easy on them, as long as they are pleasant and trying their best. The servers during subsequent dinners were very competent and pleasant. I am relieved that the music is kept to a nice low background level. One other new place in the West End has great food but we won’t be back because they keep the music too loud. Same with another new place in Yaletown that refused to turn it down so people could talk while having dinner. I hope this restaurant keeps the focus on providing excellent food, sourced locally and organic when possible. As long as they do, I will continue to be a frequent and happy diner!
