I really wanted to like The Standard. The guys seem to really know their stuff and were young local guys trying to run a new shop. So I eventually brought in my bike to get a good work over — new paint job with original vintage stickers painted on, new wheels, rims — the whole bit. I was even willing to wait a bit, and pay a bit for it. They assured me they knew the right paint guys for the job and sourcing parts for my vintage bike was no problem. However, a couple of months of waiting turned into 6 months of no word. I called the shop to see where it was at, and was told they were still trying to get a hold of the paint guy and sourcing the parts again would be no problem. Another six months, and still no paint guy. Mostly, I give up on said paint guy and move on to getting parts as that should be a swifter process. Not so much. Over another year, my bike parts are finally ordered, wrong part arrives, more time is spent sending it back, and one final time a part is shipped, but they arrive at the wrong address. Misfortunes were many, but what really sucked was that over these two years each time I received an update on the status of my bike it was I who had to do the calling. The whole time they had my bike, they never contacted me, I called and messaged them every time. The bike was never ready when I asked to pick it up by, and ultimately I would have to walk in. Their communication is terrible. In the end: all I got was a two year long bike service.

I had taken my bicycle to the Wheel Path on Denman for a problem that was supposedly in the crank shaft. The person there said it would be at least $ 100 labour plus parts. I declined his business and found The Standard Bicycle Service& Repair. They did the job for $ 25! The service was friendly too. Highly recommended!!!

I am to say the least utterly disappointed with the«service» which I have received from this supposed bike shop. I brought my bike into The Standard as it is a locally owned shop to have my bike repaired as it was involved in a car accident some time ago. They said it wouldn’t be a problem to fix and gave me a quote. I left my bike with them and for two months they were saying parts are on order. Never once did they contact me to advise that this was the case and I was stuck calling them every week asking for an update. Finally, I called and was told I could come and pick up the bike. When I picked up the bike the fenders which were paid for were not installed and they had removed my kickstand. I inquired about these two things and was told the fenders were still on order and the guy had no idea what happened to the kickstand. I rode on the repaired bike for 2 weeks at which point I had a blowout due to one of the spokes on the new wheel puncturing the tube, needless to say I was late to work that day. The following day I bought a new tube(as I’ve changed tubes before and know it isn’t a difficult thing to do) checked the wheel for holes and put the slightly inflated tube underwater to find where the hole was. I saw no holes in the tire and upon checking the wheel didn’t see any issue. So throughout the week I received two more flats and ended up putting the bike aside and borrowing a friends. As I don’t have the ability to fix a broken wheel and wasn’t about to take my bike back there and wait another 2 months for a new wheel.(I commute to work everyday) I had contacted them for a month following the pickup of my bike inquiring about the fenders at which point I was told the same story. It has now been 3 months after I picked up the bike and no word. By the way, they expected payment in advance. TL;DR — Payed $ 260 for a simple bike repair, the new wheel was poorly made and punctured 3 tubes over the span of a week. Still haven’t received parts I paid for and the kickstand which was installed on the bike prior to taking it into the shop was removed from my bike and never returned or replaced. If this is «The Standard» for which other bike repair shops in Vancouver are measured then it’s no contest as I will never take my bike here again and wouldn’t recommend this shop to anyone, ever.

These guys are awesome! I wanted my bike taken apart and boxed so I could ship it to Toronto. They only charged $ 30 including the box and they helped me get it into my car! All the other quotes I got were for over $ 100. But here is why I love them. The bike in question is a bright pink cruiser. I walked in — 7 months pregnant — with my two little dogs and my big pink bike sort of feeling like an idiot(because another store that shall remain unnamed made me feel like one — hipster joints can do that to non-hipsters) and these guys didn’t judge me at all. At another store, the guy told me my my bike wasn’t worth it and I should just buy a new one in Toronto. But these guys understood my attachment to my bike. They happily did it and played with my dogs. Great service and awesome guys!

this is a great repair-only bike shop. i took my lock-up bike to get a tune-up, and got great service, a detailed estimate of the repairs required, and a very quick turn around. i would recommend these guys to anyone.

I am so happy to have found The Standard Bicycle and Service Repair. I rolled up, not so smoothly, on my well ridden 1960s Triumph tandem and was greeted with open arms and positive attitudes. I explained all of the problems I’d been having with my bike and Matt reassured me that all of them could be taken care of. My bike has an obscure wheel size but these guys were able to track down a replacement! When my bike was all ready to go, with a new wheel, two new tires, a new cotter pin, and an all-over tune-up, I received a call to let me know it was ready, this was fantastic news, however, I had no one to ride my tandem with back to my place. Thinking it was a long shot, I asked if perhaps someone would want to ride with me, and guess what, Matt again helped me out! The ride was a smooth as butter! If you’re looking for a friendly, comfortable, ego-free, customer service oriented bike shop, that does solid work, look no further than The Standard Bicycle and Service Repair! Thanks again for everything, I’ll definitely be back with my solo bike!

what a perfect fit for this ever-charming neighbourhood! my partner and i were walking around after lunch at harvest and came across this bike shop, exclaiming that it was really good to know it was here. the guys in the shop are casual but super friendly and helpful. we ended up coming back soon after our walk when we realized we had a flat. we extended our walk for a few blocks after dropping by again with the bike, and then we were as good as new! great location, right off the adanac bike route!
