YANAKI is a very good though tiny Japanese restaurant in the heart of Ambleside West Vancouver. We just ordered from there last night. They have all the usual Japanese dishes and some delicious Specials. We usually get to go and it’s been our go to place for years. It’s consistently good. And the fact that it’s been in West Van. for so long and is always busy is a good indication that many of us who have lived in the community keep coming back. Domo Arigato Gozimashita. :))”

With so many sushi places, you really need to stand out here in West Vancouver where higher prices are guaranteed but not necessarily higher quality. Yanaki is a very small restaurant with limited seating. Like most restaurants, they have special rolls. At Yanaki, there is a specialty rolls special each day. But I’m a simpleton, I like the plain old burning rolls. Today we had many rolls Avocado, BC, salmon avocado, cucumber, tuna, salmon and the tuna tataki. It was okay, nothing spectacular. Things that stood out: They were not shy with the avocado and a little slow refilling our Tea. I left feeling full of average sushi and was hoping for something a little better.

A compact menu for a compact space, this is good affordable sushi. Sun-drenched tables drew us into this tiny sushi spot on Marine Drive. The tight menu befit the space(2 sushi bar seats; 4 two-top tables and banquette seating for 8) and we were quickly seated and served steaming hot tea. Covering all the basics — gyoza, agedashi tofu, seaweed salad, miso, tempura, sashimi, negiri, sushi and udon noodles — the menu is reasonably priced. Looking for a snack we ordered a seaweed salad and a Spider Roll to share. The seaweed salad was fantastic: one of the better ones I’ve had recently, the seaweed wasn’t overly salty and had a nice bright green colour. A nice sized portion for the price($ 3.95). The Spider Roll was good but nothing outstanding; the rice was nicely warmed from the Soft Shell Crab tempura, which was clean and crisp in taste. The table next to ours had a decent sized appy portion of Spicy Tuna Sashimi; slices of yellowtail tuna liberally drizzled with spicy sauce, and were making very approving noises of their Miso soup. Had I been able to fit in a sashimi app, I would’ve followed suit. Maybe next time…
