This liquor store is no more or less expensive than any other government liquor store in the province. It may be $$$$ compared to what Americans are used to but it wouldn’t save you any money to buy liquor in Vancouver before coming because the prices are the exact same. Plus the government store is the cheapest so buying in a private store will be more expensive. The only disadvantage of the government stores is that nothing is refrigerated so just plan ahead and you’ll be fine. The selection is good here and there’s tons of parking. Plus it’s very conveniently located if you’re staying in a hotel in this area of the village. And the staff are friendly and helpful. It’s really great that there is a liquor store here. That being said, if you are heading up from the states, I’d recommend bringing as much of your own booze with you as you can because the prices will likely shock you. The max amounts you’re allowed to bring per person over 19: 24 beers(8.5L); OR 2 bottles of wine(1.5L /53oz); OR other alcoholic beverages totalling a volume of up to 1.14L /40oz.

Okay then, we’re all pretty aware of how expensive things are in Whistler. Of if you’re not, you WILLBE as soon as you go to buy something here. This shop’s staff is pretty cool. But the prices here are insane! 30 for a 12 pack of beer? And CRAPPY beer at that??? But seriously — do yourself a favor — if you’re headed to Whistler for the weekend, buy your booze in Vancouver before heading up. Or better yet, if you’re coming from the states, buy yours at the Duty-free. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself that you did as soon as you see the prices for this stuff in Whistler. Insane.

As with many reviews I write, I wish to highlight the good and the bad about this particular place. First, the good. This particular BC liquor store has a very nice staff. I’ve special ordered scotch and the customer service was helpful, friendly and got what I ordered within days. Now, the bad. The VERYBAD aspect that is the BC liquor board. Liquor is extremely expensive in British Columbia because of antiquated liquor board controls that jack up prices by insane amounts. It prevents private businesses from even competing as they are required to charge at least what the BC Liquor stores do but cap the amount they can charge, thus limiting profits. The BC government has essentially created a government monopoly on alcohol. And if you’re saying to yourself, «Gee, it can’t be that expensive, can it?», well, you need to realize that an average bottle of scotch sees a 132% increase in price from Europe to British Columbia. It’s not uncommon to see a bottle of scotch sell for $ 30 less in Bellingham, Washington. The worst markup I’ve seen is Finlaggan, which you can find at Trader Joe’s in California for $ 17. BC sees fit to charge $ 70. Can anyone explain why there is $ 50 markup? BC Liquor Stores make it painful to be a scotch enthusiast.
