I’ve never made a purchase here but I’ve often perused their inventory and enjoyed the calming atmosphere. The attendant was genial and allowed me to browse in peace. The location is wonderful. They carry an eclectic variety of books and curious trinkets. There is also a coffee shop a couple doors down that shares the same name that makes delicious treats and wonderful coffee. Absolutely worth a visit while finishing your walk along the promenade.

Lousy Customer Service Will Keep Me Away My Mother was visiting from Miami and I took her on a great stroll along the White Rock Beach promenade. While I traditionally visit a different alternative bookstore on the waterfront, it was closed so I ventured into Whitby’s. We were greeted(if you can call it that) by a gum-chewing bottle-blond who was way past her prime. We were the only people in the store, and yet she still couldn’t find time to assist us in our purchase. The clerk spent most of the time arguing on the phone with someone who was reserving a book, but from the sounds of the conversation, the store had ordered the wrong item. We politely asked her if she could make a deal on an $ 80 lamp, she curtly replied, «If you knew what our margins are, you’d say ‘thank you’ and then you wouldn’t say another would about it!»(Yikes, sorry for asking!) In the end, this rude customer service kept us from buying a lovely lamp, and it will keep me from ever stepping foot in this store again. For a place that sells spiritual/alternative items, they sure do have a troll behind the till!
