Winnipeg is about 5 years behind in the food truck trend that has taken over major Canadian and U.S. cities. I salivate whenever I see some food truck being featured on the Food Network and wonder why we can’t amazing food trucks that serve beyond hot dogs and deep fried crap. Then I realize that we only have good weather for about 3 months of the year so maybe that’s the reason why? Not sure… Anyways, this taco food truck is on Portage Avenue during the weekday lunch hours — usually in front of the MB Hydro building or around the Air Canada/APTN area. So really, on Portage Ave but somewhere near the vicinity of Portage and Carlton. And in the evenings, they park themselves on Henderson Highway, south of McLeod Avenue. You can follow them on Twitter or Facebook for updates. I love the enthusiasm from the two guys I chatted with. They convinced me to get the«El Grande» meal which is 3 chicken tacos + 1 chorizo hot dog and a drink for $ 10. Now who am I to resist? The tacos are authentically sized — similar to what you’d get at Café Mercadito Latino(also on Henderson Hwy) so that means that the tacos would be a very very light lunch or a nice little starter size. They are served on real corn tortillas so they do fall apart fairly easily if you don’t eat it up quickly. I loved the taste of the grill on the chicken and lovely seasoning. Every thing in the taco was subtle and I didn’t find the salsa verde to pack any heat. There were onions, tomatoes, cilantro and even a few wedges of lime were included. Even my 3 year old niece loved the tacos — with onions, cilantro and all! And tacos are $ 2 each or $ 5 for 3. But I have to say that the chorizo hot dog is the total winner for me! I would even drive to Henderson Hwy(totally out of my way) to get one of these tonight! LOL. OMG, that chorizo is very flavourful, though once again, I didn’t find much heat in the sausage. The dog is served on a regular hot dog bun and topped with the tomatoes, salsa verde, onion, cilantro and mayo. This hot dog is $ 5 if you order a la carte and totally worth it! Love this place… I like that everything tastes fresh and provides a different offering than the typical hot dog stand. I hope to get in some more lunches before they close up at the end of August.
