The food here was absolutely spectacular! The plating was fun and the food was even more delicious than it looked. The Hokkaido hotategai was divine, the tempura was light and crispy(and I really enjoyed the tempura sauce), and the nigiri was fresh. I really enjoyed the dessert, the pandan crème brûlée was amazing! Small restaurant and the owners were friendly and knew their menu very well and were able to help me pick, as everything looked lovely.

Overall it was good sushi. Fish was fresh, tempura was average, goma ea was excellent, Baku Dan was below average. I’ve had sushi just as good in the city for less money, and I’ve definitely had worse. Would I repeat for the money and overall experience? Not sure. Service was lacking, we were rushed out before we could order dessert. Plates didn’t fit on the table. Desert wasn’t offered — just a bill and a constant«are you ready to pay?». The restaurant was not busy, empty tables around us, so no need for the rush. And I really wanted some desert.

I agree with Michael O. below who says the downside of raving about a small place like this is the inevitable no reservations when you want it. LOL. I’ve ordered take out and eaten here a few times and have not been disappointed. This is a great place — taking over from the former location of Modern Taco on Academy, this place is run by the former owners of Asahi(on Broadway) years ago. Despite the proliferation of so many sushi places in the city, it’s hard to find a quality place with inventive dishes. I’ve been sorely disappointed with all the Wasabi’s over the years and Yujiro has been good but lacks the inventiveness and sometimes the freshness can be a miss. Anyhow, small restaurant with a sushi bar for about 6 people and then about 6 or so tables for 4 tops. There’s a lot of interesting tapas, sushi rolls, and even a small wagyu(Kobe) beef selection plus a separate menu of chef’s specials. Some faves of mine: Fusian roll($ 14) marinated salmon, avocado inside a lightly tempura rice roll topped with tuna and tobiko. This was a great roll as the rice on the inside out roll is lightly deep fried(not oily at all) but the tempura on the exterior gives it a great subtle crunchy texture. Also liked the tuna sunset roll($ 14) REAL crab meat, avocado, layered with salmon, topped with tuna mixed with ponzu sauce, tobiko, chili, green onion, mayo and tempura flakes. Real crab meat makes the roll as so many places uses the fake stuff. Fantastic roll that wasn’t spicy at all which is fine by me as you can taste all the flavours. Wagyu beef sliders($ 18) for two sliders — sushi rice is the«bun» and the wagyu beef patty has a lot of flavour going on in there… might have tasted some lemongrass, tonkatsu aioli and sesame. yeah it’s a bit pricey but, hey it’s wagyu beef… delicious and perfectly cooked, juicy and very flavourful. Sashimi very fresh here as well but is pricier than other places but for the size and quality, it’s about right. Service is very friendly and food service was well paced. Drink menu is a few wines, some beers, a couple of sakes — wish they would expand the alcohol selection a bit more but that’s the only drawback. Overall the price isn’t that bad at all, the maki and standard rolls are about $ 7 and the house rolls are in the $ 12-$ 14 range. The tapas range in price but are mostly in the low teens.

AMAZINGFOOD!!! I’ve never had anything like the food I’ve had here! Nothing compares. You have to book pretty far ahead, but trust me when I say the wait is worth it! Went for my mom’s birthday, for 5 of us it was about $ 400 with drinks, but not that bad considering all the delicious food and desserts we all stuffed ourselves with.(And I would pay it again in a heartbeat) The staff was so accommodating, and very sweet… Especially for putting up with my dad’s embarrassing comments. I will most definitely be back the next time I come to visit my family in Winnipeg, this place is a winner!

One downside to telling everyone how great the restaurant is leads to not getting a reservation when you want it. The worst part is using their take-out service and then being told they are too busy to serve you so they cancelled my order. Not a great experience when we had people over to try it.
