I had a terrible experience here last summer. First, Joel made me come in for just a consultation to discuss my hair before making an appointment, and I had to wait awhile for him even though we’d made an appointment. He didn’t charge for this. When I came for my appointment the following week, he’d forgotten what we had decided, so we had to start at the beginning. In other words, the consultation was wasted time. He then gave me a color that was very different from what we’d discussed, and it washed out within a week. He gave me one of the worst cuts I’ve ever had. My bangs looked like a mullet. No joke. When I called him the following week to complain about both, he brought me back in and improved it, though neither was still great. On the phone he’d said he would charge me to fix it, but then he didn’t(thankfully). Joel is a nice guy, but I’d never get my hair done there again.

I’m actually writing this on behalf of my wife. We were visiting Winnipeg to attend a wedding last week. On the day of the wedding, my wife wanted to have her hair straightened and styled for the wedding. Since it has been 17 years since we were last there, a lot has changed. After consulting Unilocal,we chose Oxfords Salon in Osborne Village. Amber was her stylist and it turns out, the owner of Oxfords. We were thrilled with how wonderful my wife’s hair turned out and we were sure to tell everyone who asked at the wedding where they should go if they want fantastic service and a great style. Very happy that we found Oxfords and met Amber.

Ashton is my regular hair stylist and colourist. She’s fabulous, careful, talented and she really listens to your concerns. Every time I’ve been there she’s gone on pinterest to show me ideas that she has for my hair. Oxfords itself is fantastic, the complimentary aveda tea and head massage is super soothing and starts the appointment off on a positive note. Prices are on the higher end, but reasonable for the quality of service that you get.

Today I had my third visit to Oxford since last December, and given my history with stylists over the past 3 years wanted to wait long enough to write a review to ensure the great colour, cut and service I was receiving at Oxford was a standard and not just a fluke. It has been over 10 weeks since my last colour, and no word of a lie, I could probably have lasted a few more weeks if I wasn’t desperate for a cut. Finally, finally, finally, a stylist listened to me when I told her my base colour isn’t as dark as the stylists had been claiming it to be over the past 3 years. Really, you’ve known me for 5 minutes and are trying to tell me about the hair I’ve had for the past 46 years? Really? So, kudos to the lovely Ashton at Oxford, for caring, for listening, for her continued commitment to professional development, for putting the customer’s needs first and for wanting to make clients happy. Also, a big round of applause for checking her ego at the door, providing an enjoyable experience, and for having the memory of an elephant. In Ashton I have found what I’ve been looking for for over 5 years, a reliable stylist who treats each head of hair as uniquely as the person who owns it. It’s not easy getting a good fit with the person you are trusting your appearance to, and I’ve had my fair share of heartache over the years. Even now I’m trying to grow out one of the worst cuts I’ve ever had(Wiink in Langford) and am comforted by the fact that I am now in the hands of someone who gets that, understands and supports my journey back to honouring my hair. Phew, one less thing to worry about as we settle back into life in The Peg. PJ xoxo
