Took a day trip to Isla Contoy with Captain Tony. Waste of money, don’t bother. However, if you insist on going, above all things, TAKEMOSQUITOREPELLENT! We had to seek refuge in the water because the mosquitoes on land were viscous. This prevented us from venturing the island, because inland had tons of vegetation which meant MORE mosquitoes, but with vampire fangs!
In my opinion, if you’re staying in Isla Mujeres, there is no need to venture to Contoy for a beautiful, ‘unspoiled’ paradise. You already have it. Also, if you’re an avid reef snorkeler, Contoy will probably disappoint. The water was cloudy and therefore we saw nada. Perhaps it is indeed beautiful when clear, but again, I get the sense that avid reef snorkelers will be disappointed.(Unless you’re on the quest to see a Whale Shark — which we didn’t see) Our tour operator, Tony, who came highly recommended, must not have wanted to work that day. He wasn’t engaging, seemed bored and basically left us up to our own devices. Lunch — included in tour — was the best part of this entire trip. On the menu: fish, chicken, guac, chips and mango/pineapple salad, soda and ONE40oz beer. Very simple, but delicious and satisfying. Total round-trip duration from Isla Mujeres was about 90 mins. The ride was rough and Tony’s little boat took quite a beating. So did our derrière’s from the lack of seat cushioning. Reviewers on travel sites seem to really like this island and day trip. Not sure why, but to each their own.
