My local friends brought me here immediately after I got out of customs. They told me that this was their favorite spot for tacos al pastor in Mexico City, so I couldn’t say no.(I learned later that this restaurant is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year: a well-deserved congratulations!) Parking was difficult on a Friday evening: after a couple of different guys tried to coax us to park where they pointed to on the street, we found our own spot and walked over to Don Ray. The owner was there(as usual) with his cowboy hat on and saying hello to all of the customers. I don’t speak Spanish well, but he seemed very friendly and genuinely wants to make sure you have a great experience. He even sent out a plate full of pork ribs as a gift. My friends ordered enough tacos al pastor con queso and tacos de suadero(brisket) for our party of four, as well as a huge chicharron de queso. Plus, we could load up on as much and on whatever kind of salsa we wanted since the tables are shared, and the salsas are in big bowls right down the middle. We washed down our delicious food with mango and guava juice and horchata. My first meal after touching down in Mexico City was just the first step of the food marathon to come. And what a great start!
