Rating des Ortes: 4 Orange, CA
The bright and warm yellowish-orange façade and its charming to-go window reveal Teo’s cozy interior, a deli-style eatery with a selection of breakfast, lunch, and pastries. It also has ties with the artistic community, serving as a gallery that showcases a rotation of local artists. The ambience is elegantly relaxed, an escape for the everyday hustle and bustle of Mexico City. The food is elegantly plated, the flavors and presentation are reminiscent of contemporary California cuisine, with bright and acidic flavors coming to the forefront in an appeasing way. The food has an injection of Mexican flavors, though one would hesitate to identify the food as Mexican or even contemporary Mexican. Does Mexican food really need foreign influence to maintain its relevance despite its deeply rich and varied history? Notwithstanding, both the ‘Toast de Aguacate’ and the ‘Huevo Puerco were well executed and displayed promise. We tried both their cookies, ‘cacahuate garapiñado’ and ‘chocolate con sal de mar’, the former was tasty and creative but the latter was too salty and nearly inedible. Still, both showed hope of better things to come. Overall a satisfying meal in and area where food is going through a rejuvenating phase. Still, I hope that true passion for our own heritage, techniques and flavors will lead the contemporizing of Mexican cuisine.
