I first discovered La Playa liquor stores back in 2002, during my first trip to Vallarta. I stayed solo at a hotel just north of the downtown that time and had one of their Super La Playa stores within a handy walking distance of the hotel. It had what I wanted, and soon became a big favourite of mine. This La Playa store has been our place to go for ‘spirits’ over the many Vallarta stays since that first one — we started staying at small hotels south of the downtown in 2004. Although very small, this store is «fully-packed», and from our experiences over the years, offers some of the best selections and prices to be found in this area of the city. When it comes to purchasing beer, and non-alcoholic mixes(especially those that have already been chilled in a cooler), the convenience stores work best for me. But when it comes to purchasing wines, liquors, and liqueurs, it’s most-definitely the La Playa store. They have a decent selection of low-to-moderately-priced wines(when in Vallarta, I tend towards the Chilean wines, they seem to provide ‘the’ best value), some very good rums(some favourites: Macollo — a Mexican rum, is a winner!, and Ron Castillo — a Nicaraguan rum bottled in Mexico, is good, and very good value), inexpensive to some very fine tequila’s(I tend to go with moderately-priced reposado tequila’s, like El Jimador, and similarly-priced brands), and liqueurs(for us, it’s mostly coffee liqueurs, like Kahlua and Don Pancho). There are several more liquor store competitors to La Playa in this part of the city now, and they’re good for acquiring some of the harder to get brand labels, wine vintages, and the like. But for me, La Playa has always had what we want, when we want it, and for ‘the’ same product, at prices I’ve always found to ‘beat’ others. Cheers!
