Make no mistake, Villas Ecotucan is definitely an eco-hotel, with an emphasis on the eco. The managers were quite nice but not too attentive. When we arrived, we were shown to our«room,» which was basically a palapa with walls. In some ways, this is what we were looking for. We wanted a different experience in the rainforest. A way to get closer to nature. Unfortunately, the bugs were a little too close, and the room did not do anything to keep them out. There were mosquito nets over the beds, so we were pretty safe from the mosquitos while we slept, though all bets were off if we were anywhere else. Without a doubt, I got more mosquito bites in one day/night at Villas Ecotucan than I can remember getting anywhere else. Also, because of the«rainforest» everything was a little damp. The sheets and towels didn’t feel dry/clean. The shower and toilets were pretty tolerable, though the pressure wasn’t very strong and it took a while to warm up. My wife wasn’t very comfortable here, and the whole time I found myself trying to defend the place to her by reminding her that we were in a rainforest, and that Ecotucan advertised an eco experience, not a luxury one. Still, she does not tend be particularly picky, and I had to ask myself was there more that they could be doing. In the end, I decided she was right. If Villas Ecotucan took a few simple steps to increase the comfort level, this place could be really very cool. I should mention that it wasn’t all bad. They had a dock on the lagoon, that was quite nice and peaceful for lounging on. And they offered kayaks, which we took advantage of. But even here is felt like there was a step missing. It was not easy to get into the water. The ladder into the water was dangerously slippery, and the water was dark with growth around the pier, causing it to be a bit mysterious and possibly even scary. If there was someone around who might’ve given a bit of guidance, it would’ve been nice, anyone who has never used a kayak might’ve struggled, for example. I’d like to see Villas Ecotucan reach the next level. They’re just not quite there yet. In the meantime, unless you love mosquitos, there might be some better options for you in the area.
