A city within a city The Quintas Carolinas are much like the plantations of the United States. They have a huge headquarters Manor House with multiple support structures surrounding it. It works like a small town with it’s own church, hospital, warehouses, administration house, mill, wagon house, and horse stables. It was founded as part of the Terrazas-Creel family property empire and named after his wife Carolina Cuilty in 1896. It was the jewel of Chihuahua, with three domes and elaborate masonry work. Once the revolution started the estate was seized and used as a military base for the revolutionary army under Villa. It passed from generals back to the Terrazas and then to Jorge Muños and functioned once more as a huge farm. In the mid 20th century, the Quinta stopped producing and was only occupied as a weekend home by the Muños family. It was at this time that thieves began breaking into the home and taking everything of value. Several arsonist set fire to the building eventually destroying the great central dome, the home was now completely abandoned. The Muños family decided to donate the property to the state of Chihuahua and reconstruction/preservation has been ongoing. After several decades the home is almost completed, but most of the surrounding property still has a long way to go before fully coming back to it’s former glory. This is a wonderful place for pictures, but there is plenty of graffiti on some of the buildings and you will probably want to come accompanied as vagabonds still roam around especially at night.
