This is a very small airport. There are 4 «gates» but the reality is everyone is sitting in one big room overlooking 4 doors that lead outside. There are no jet bridges so you will walk outside to your plane and board by stairs. I’m not complaining, it works just fine. It’s just different than major airports in the US that I am used to. Another unusual but normal-for-small airport thing they do here is they taxi the jet aircraft on the active runway. Again, this is OK because there are very few flights coming in and out of the airport. However for me when I saw this for the first time I was a little worried since there’s no taxi path and a small spot for the planes to turn around at the end of the runway. Inside the service is good. You can get through customs and security quite quickly. Depending when you arrive your wait to check-in might be long or short. If you are really looking to push for minimum time at the airport for an international flight, I would arrive no later than 1 hour before the flight leaves but that is cutting it really close. 90 minutes is much better. The only problem is once you get past security there is not much more to do. No real shopping or places to eat. A small café is inside the gate area. If you are inbound expect some delays in getting checked out into Mexico because everyone must feed their bags through x-ray and then press a button for red or green to see if your bags get inspected. Most people get green of course and I’ve been lucky 2 of 2 times so far. Car rental is available but as an American I would not recommend driving, at least the first few times. Inside the airport is a taxi desk just outside customs. You pay for your taxi there and then they tell you what taxi number to look for just outside the airport doors. It is a very small airport so you will have no problem finding your taxi. This works well and I’ve had no problems so far. For such a small airport I’m surprised and impressed with the city itself. About 1 million people and a nice downtown area. Over 500 years old and worth checking out. By the way, the city is at an elevation of just over 6,000 feet so do not expect overly hot weather and you might have problems exercising or adjusting to the altitude at first. Hope you enjoy your stay in San Luis Potosi!
