This is an excellent Indian restaurant in Whenuapai, north of Auckland. We happened to order take away here while staying with our friends, who live just around the corner from here. Chicken marsala and Korma were both very tasty, as were the fish marsala and chicken saag. The garlic butter naan was also quite good. The service was fast and our friends’ son picked up our order within 15 minutes. I wish I had an Indian take away so close to where we live, let alone one this good.

As locals this place is a regular for us. I have to admit we’ve never eaten in, only had take-away but the food is always great! They are really quick with good quality food and friendly service. As Whenuapai is a small suburb we’re really happy these guy’s opened up!

This restaurant is situated in rural Whenuapai Village, only one of two operating commercial businesses in the area. The cooking is more or less undertaken in the restaurant so I assume at some stage it may have been a former takeaway bar of fast food restaurant. My partner and I have had dinner at Babas about four times over the past year and the food is absolutely delicious. Often with Indian mains(particularly curries) there is often little to distinguish one dish from another however the dishes here are diverse with quite distinctive flavours. All the mains we’ve tried have been great however my favourite dish is the goat so if it’s on the menu I highly recommend it. We’ve never had to order an entrée or desert as two mains and two Naan breads have been enough for us. The overall cost is modest and the wait staff gracious and attentive. If you are looking for a fine-dining experience with all the flashy Indian embelishments then this probably isn’t it. What it does offer however is great food, great service in a low-key, homely almost provincial environment giving it a charm and distinctiveness all of its own.
