The Bacco Room sounds too classy for what it actually describes. I’ve been here twice: once to see the Datsuns, which was the rowdy sweat-soaked affair you’d expect, and another time to see a hip-hop gig. How was that? I can’t remember anything about it, except that a girl’s HEADCAUGHTFIRE because she stood too close to a candle. A guy who was there with us saw it and told her(she hadn’t actually noticed yet) and after she put herself out she bought him a bottle of wine as a thank you. Classy? Bacco doesn’t even come close, and I mean that as a compliment. As for the bar itself: nothing too special as far as décor goes, black paint and low ceilings, the usual story. For live music the sound is good enough although not the best in the city — but let’s be honest, when you go out to see a show you’re going as much for the atmosphere as the acoustics, and Bacco has that in spades.

The Bacco Room is the Mr. Hyde of Toto’s Restaurant. This is the black basement belly of a fancy restaurant, where the wild children are sent to play. It is a chimerical wonderland of indistinct bodies gyrating between beams of light. It’s insane and it’s fantastic. As a venue room of Toto’s it often hosts big, underground music events. Hard house and d’n’b beats, complete with lasers and strobes and glowing art on the walls. A brilliant place to come and get frenzied until very early hours of the morning, without every 18 year old in the city in there, requesting Bruno Mars mash-ups.
