Markets seem even more special when they have a rural setting, take a good drive to get too and are discovered by chance! Which is what happened the first time we came across this place; we were heading back home to Auckland, from Coromandel after a brief camping trip and wanted to take the scenic way back, which led us through this quaint township. I remembered I had heard about the Clevedon Village Markets through my lonely planets guide to the North Island before moving here from overseas, and was super happy to come across it, although it was closing up time and only a few stalls were left. Still managed to squeeze in a look at some local handicrafts and left over produce though. Lovely market, lovely township, worth supporting for sure.

Just a short drive down the road from the Clevedon Farmers Market is the Clevedon Village Markets. This one definitely has a bit more of a local feel to it and that is apparent in their stallholders. They sell a lot of collectibles, books, and arts and crafts to vases, jewellery and produce– there really is a bit of everything here! They’re also all at great prices. A majority of the stalls are inside the community hall there and there is a lot to look at, so be prepared to spend more than a few minutes inside. There’s a great real frozen fruit ice-cream truck just outside the hall, and their ice cream is incredible. The servings are really generous, I’d give their boysenberry ice cream a 10 out of 10. The Village Markets also allow you to pay for everything by EFTPOS so there’s no need for cash– so handy especially if you’re making an impromptu visit. The Village markets are a great way to support local products and the stallholders I’ve encountered are really friendly. If you’re in the area, I’d do a double whammy and visit both of Clevedon’s popular Sunday markets.
