When your appetite for sun and the beach is filled and your stomach is making some noise, call on wood-fire pizza! But more than the pizza, which was pretty«average,» I would go for the polenta box instead! We got four well-sized, perfectly cooked slices that were exceptionally matched to green salad, mashed beans, and tomato mixture. This I would go back to Waiheke Island to eat. Be warned though that you might want to call /text ahead your order for take away. Otherwise, plan on waiting 25 minutes. I ended up waiting 35 minutes and only the polenta box saved me from turning angry at the long wait.

Dragonfired is half the reason that Little Oneroa is my favourite beach on Waiheke. I mean, where else can you get delicious wood fired pizzas, calzones and pita pockets beachside? Positioned right next to the dairy, the friendly(and a little bit cheeky) food truck dishes out freshly fired delights 7 days a week during Summer… although I’m told they tend to run out towards the end of the day so get in early. So far, I’ve tried their pizzas and their polenta boxes(yes, they do them too). The pizzas — big enough to share between two or if extra hungry, eat solo — have thin, crispy bases and a generous amount of toppings. As for the polenta box, think of this like an Italian bento box w refried beans, a chunky tomato salsa and a salad of greens, artichokes, olives and seeds. The polenta comes roasted in squares with a small amount of feta(I wish there was more!!) — delish! For me, it’s the perfect pitstop after a day of swimming & sunbathing!

We popped in here one evening after cycling around a few wineries in Waiheke. The food truck is located beside the Little Oneroa beach which is a pretty cool location on a warm summer evening. Unfortunately it appears that most of the people on the island must be aware of this because they had sold out of nearly everything by the time we arrived there. We managed to get our hands on some Mexican pita pocket($ 8 each) after a long wait. We were a bit disappointed because although the ingredients tasted fresh the filling and the pocket in general was just not hot enough. We felt like we needed to rush to eat them because they were going cold so quickly. Im sure this is not a big deal for alot of people but I like my hot food to be hot! We would have preferred to try out the pizzas but they were all sold out. I would not get the pita pocket again, but not because it was bad. I think I am just not a big fan of this type of food. If we return, I will try the pizza if i get the chance. It is hard to go wrong, sitting on the beach enjoying some nice food with some good company :-)

It is hard to complain with a takeaway store where you can order, swim at an amazing beach, and then eat an overflowing vegetarian pocket bread with a delicious mix of refried beans, avocado, tomato salsa, sour cream, and seasonal greens. Tobasco and Kaitaia fire are available to spice up the occasion, and at $ 8 I just had a hoot of a time. I also had pizza at Splore from Dragonfired, which is simple and delicious. Great.

Dragonfired pizza is a nifty pizza kitchen in a little truck that rocks up to Little Oneroa and makes the most delicious pizza and calzone on the Island, or perhaps anywhere in Auckland for that matter. Whether you come for lunch or dinner, there’s really nothing quite like chilling out on a beautiful swimming beach as you wait for your order to cook. There’s a little grassy area with a couple of bench seats, as well as sand to spread out on, and plenty of car parking too. Dragonfired is deservedly popular so make the most of the phone order system — you can check out their menu online too. The serving are very generous so consider sharing.
